Walsh backs Wiegman to stay on as England boss
Keira Walsh says she would love Sarina Wiegman to remain as England manager, although the Lionesses are keeping their focus firmly on securing World Cup qualification.
Wiegman was asked about her future ahead of England’s qualifier against Greece but declined to discuss it, insisting the immediate priority is on the qualifier second leg.
“Obviously I’d want her to stay,” Walsh said, however.
“I think we don’t really talk about it too much. Sarina’s the boss. I would never ask her those questions. I think everyone in England would love her to stay.
“I’ve played a lot of games for her and I really appreciate her as a manager, but obviously it’s her decision and I think it’s something we don’t really think about.
“We’ve got a job to do and obviously we need to qualify for a World Cup. That’s probably at the forefront of what everyone’s thinking about.
“I’ve not given much thought to it, but obviously I’d love her to stay.”
Asked about her future, with her contract up after the World Cup next year, Wiegman said: “I think at this moment, we’re only focused on Greece, and I don’t wanna talk about me because this camp is not about me.
“In this moment, we’re preparing for Greece and it’s all about Greece tomorrow.”
Wiegman confirmed everyone in the squad is available for Tuesday night’s game in Leicester and is hoping her side can be more clinical, despite leading 3-1 from the first leg.
“Keira actually said it already, the execution in the final third,” she said on where her side need to improve.
“We got in good positions, but then it’s staying onside, having the final pass, the right pass at the right moment, have the run at the right time at the right moment and decide over what options you choose.”
