A historic scenario repeats itself

Saturday's Milan derby, played in the tenth round of the Italian league, exploded into life from the first whistle and dragged up memories of one of the most astonishing clashes these two giants have ever produced. Inter found themselves in a predicament they had not faced for decades.

Milan wasted no time stamping their authority on the game. Christian Pulisic opened the scoring in the fourth minute, Adrien Rabiot doubled the lead in the tenth, and Inter were two goals down inside the opening exchanges.

According to a statistic from Mister Chip via X, "Inter had not trailed by two goals against an opponent in the Italian league within the first ten minutes since the second of December 2016, when they lost to Napoli by a clean three goals".

For the derby specifically, you have to go back to the sixth of November 1949 for anything like it. Enrico Candiani scored twice for Milan in the first and seventh minutes that day, only for Inter to stage a stunning turnaround and win 6-5.

Inter tried to claw their way back into this one too. Alessandro Bastoni pulled a goal back in the 22nd minute, but Milan soon restored the two-goal cushion as Diego Moreira struck in the 43rd. The hosts headed into the break two goals clear.
