USMNT Ligue 1 match day 8 recap: Weah's goal keeps him in Nations League mix

On a Sunday that featured the first NFL game in France, the Americans had some strong performances in soccer as well. Four of the six started, and those who did continued their strong form ahead of the USMNT's upcoming November camp.

Tim Weah, Olympique Marseille

Weah continued his run of top form since missing out on the October USMNT camp. The captain followed up last weekend's two-assist performance with a goal of his own, leading Marseille to a 4-3 victory against Le Havre. Weah was stout on the defensive end as well, winning six of nine duels along with five tackles.

Weah will have to be on Mauricio Pochettino's radar for November's Nations League camp. The veteran has been playing well enough to play impactful minutes, and his experience could prove vital in these competitive matches. While Alex Freeman has cemented himself as the first choice at the position, Weah can certainly play a role in his relief.

Gio Reyna, Strasbourg

Reyna had another strong performance despite Strasbourg's 3-0 defeat to Rennes on Sunday. Reyna started again and played 84 minutes, creating two chances and putting a shot on goal. He completed 31/37 passes and won 11/15 duels, but was also shown a yellow card.

Though an unfortunate result for the club, Reyna's potential continues to flash, and he is showing that he is capable of being a mainstay on the USMNT roster. A packed midfield, no doubt, but Reyna is a serious candidate to start against Haiti next month.

Mark McKenzie, Toulouse

McKenzie solidified Toulouse's defense, helping maintain a second consecutive clean sheet, this time drawing 0-0 with Troyes. McKenzie won 6/11 duels and completed a whopping 102/110 passes. Like Reyna, he was shown a yellow card. McKenzie might not be the best option for the USMNT to play alongside Richards, but his consistency at the club level should keep him on Pochettino's radar.

Tanner Tessmann, Lyon

Tessmann got another start in midfield for Lyon's clash against PSG, but was not able to contribute anything meaningful. He played the full 90 minutes, but Lyon ended up dropping the match, 2-0, after allowing two late goals. The 25-year-old completed 22/27 passes and made four clearances in the losing effort.

Folarin Balogun, AS Monaco

Balogun played an entire minute in Monaco's 1-1 draw with Lille, further solidifying his imminent exit from the club. The USMNT striker has not been given many opportunities since returning from his injury, and it appears a transfer away from Monaco is Balogun's only option to further his career. It will be interesting to see if Pochettino gives him a call for the upcoming international break.

Bryan Reynolds, Rennes

After notching an assist in Europa League on Thursday, Reynolds did not feature for Rennes in a week that saw three other USMNT right backs score a goal (Weah, Freeman, Scally). Despite his strong recent run of play, the position is competitive, so it is unclear if Reynolds has done enough to earn a call-up.
