USMNT in Bundesliga matchday 9 review: Another goal for roster snub Joe Scally
The international break is here, but not before one last round of games in the German Bundesliga and everywhere else in Europe. Of course, not every American in the Bundesliga was named to the November USMNT roster. But we're still keeping close tabs on all of them. Here is how the USMNT contingent in Germany performed on matchday 9.
Santiago Castañeda, Paderborn
With his first call-up to the national team, Castañeda is someone we’ll be watching extra closely. As usual, he was one of the better players on the field for Paderborn from his central midfield position. Castañeda led the game with three successful dribbles, while also creating two chances and making eight defensive contributions. Despite Paderborn giving up a late goal, the club managed a 2-2 draw with Frankfurt, keeping them clear of the relegation zone.
Cole Campbell, Elversberg
Campbell and Elversberg matched up against Mathis Albert and Borussia Dortmund on Saturday. Unfortunately, Albert didn’t play, while Campbell only made a cameo off the bench, entering the game in the 67th minute. Despite playing just 23 minutes, Campbell led the game with five successful dribbles. He also won six of his 10 duels and recorded a shot on target. Campbell won’t be with the USMNT during the Nations League, but he will play with the Under-23 squad during the international break.
Joe Scally, Borussia Mönchengladbach
Despite getting snubbed for the November USMNT roster, Scally continued his amazing season for Mönchengladbach, scoring his team-leading fourth goal of the campaign. Some are claiming it was an assist and not a goal, but either way, Scally deserves most of the credit. Unfortunately, it was another bad day for Mönchengladbach. Scally’s goal tied the game right before halftime. But his side gave up two goals in the second half in a 3-1 loss to Hamburg, keeping Mönchengladbach last in the Bundesliga.
Malik Tillman, Bayer Leverkusen
Tillman was back in the starting lineup for Leverkusen's 2-1 win over Koln. He should have scored a goal but was the victim of an amazing save by Koln goalie Marvin Schwabe, who had a Player of the Match performance in a losing effort. Tillman also had a shot from distance that just curled wide. Tillman also made three defensive contributions and won four of his seven duels. Ahead of the international break in which he figures to log heavy minutes, Tillman played 76 minutes in Leverkusen's victory.
