Skubala discusses Bristol City star’s future at the club

Michael Skubala hopes Bristol City and Jason Knight’s joint statement has brought an end to speculation surrounding the Robins captain’s future.

Knight had been linked with a move away during the summer transfer window but a transfer did not materialise.

The 25-year-old and Bristol City released a joint statement after the end of the window confirming that a contract extension had been unable to be agreed this summer, with his current deal up next summer.

But the club also confirmed he would remain as captain, and Skubala says it is important to now move on and focus on the season ahead.

Asked whether Wednesday’s statement had drawn a line under the situation, Skubala said: “I hope so.

“I think myself, James and Charlie, we want to make sure we’re being really transparent about how we do things.

“I think hopefully the fans will have seen that and hopefully people outside have really appreciated the transparency, but Jason is a top player. He’s my captain, he’s been great, and he’s really committed to the club.

“Now, as you say, he’s here [under contract] for the rest of the season, at least.”

Sporting director James Ellis acknowledged in the club’s statement that Knight has ambitions of playing at the highest level, but Skubala believes that is a desire shared throughout the Bristol City squad.

“Every player wants that,” he added. “I think every player wants to challenge to get Premier League football.

“Everybody in this club is trying to help this club get to the Premier League. That’s from staff, that’s from the academy staff who are supporting players, that’s from all the commercial staff that are trying to fill the stadium.

“That’s everybody.

“We’re all invested in the same thing and, of course, all the players are. Jason’s like everyone.”
