Serie A Preview: Napoli vs Frosinone – Team News, Lineups & Prediction
Stadio Diego Armando Maradona sets the stage for a high-stakes Serie A clash between Napoli and Frosinone. There’s little margin for error for Massimiliano Allegri in Saturday’s fixture, as his future at the club hangs by a thread.
Despite taking charge of Napoli in the summer, Allegri has already come under heavy scrutiny. The former Milan and Juventus manager has overseen just two wins in the first five Serie A rounds (D1, L2), and the Partenopei faithful are putting pressure on Aurelio De Laurentiis to relieve him of his duties.
A 1-1 draw at Fiorentina just before September’s international break left Napoli six points adrift of table-topping Roma, and there’s a feeling that another slip-up here could spell the end of Allegri’s tenure in Naples. However, this doesn’t look like a simple task for last season’s runners-up, with Frosinone set to roll into town in high spirits.
Back to Serie A after a two-year absence, Massimiliano Alvini’s men look determined to stay up this time around. After a narrow 1-0 home loss to Juventus on the opening weekend, the visitors have hit the ground running, securing three wins from their last four league outings (D1), including a 2-0 victory over Como before the break.
As a result, they commence this matchday three points clear of their more esteemed hosts.
Match Preview
Napoli
It’s been a complicated start to the 2026/27 season for Napoli. In addition to their domestic struggles, the Partenopei slipped to a 1-0 home loss to Arsenal in their curtain-raising Champions League fixture, as the pressure continues to mount on under-fire Allegri, who’s on the brink of an unwanted piece of history.
The 59-year-old could suffer ten league defeats in one calendar year for the first time since 2012, but Napoli’s strong record against newly promoted clubs offers the Italian coach a silver lining. Indeed, they’ve emerged victorious from their last six league encounters against newcomers, a feat they’ve only eclipsed twice before.
Another triumph could be on the cards here, not least because Napoli have beaten Frosinone in five of their six previous Serie A meetings (D1). However, they’d be wise not to get complacent after failing to win the last two competitive showdowns against this opposition (D1, L1), including a 2-2 draw in their most recent league clash at this stadium.
Frosinone
Even the most optimistic Frosinone fans could not have expected the Canaries to open the season the way they did. Quick to bounce back from a day-one loss to Juventus, Alvini’s charges have bested Como, Venezia, and Fiorentina while sharing the spoils with Genoa at the Marassi.
To give Frosinone’s high-flying Serie A start further perspective, they’ve become the first newly promoted side to hit a 10-point landmark after the opening five rounds since 2012/13. As if that’s not inspiring enough, the visitors’ unbeaten away run in league action now spans more than 12 months (W10, D7).
Another win here, though it’d have to come at long odds, would see Frosinone become the first Serie A newcomer to reach 13 points after the first six matches since Juventus in 2007/08. They can take further confidence from breaking the deadlock in four consecutive league outings as they seek their maiden away win over Napoli in Serie A.
Team News
Italian starlet Antonio Vergara has joined Alisson Santos, Alessandro Buongiorno, Mathias Olivera, and Costantino Favasuli on the sidelines and could be unavailable until November. However, Napoli have welcomed Alex Meret, Leonardo Spinazzola, and Scott McTominay, with the latter likely to start on the bench.
On the other hand, Florian Grillitsch remains the most notable absentee in the Frosinone squad. Free-scoring striker Antonio Raimondo is a doubt after picking up a minor injury during the international break. In case Alvini refuses to put his in-form star at risk, Tomas Bobcek could be in line for his first Serie A start.
Napoli vs Frosinone Potential Starting Lineups
Napoli (3-4-2-1): Meret; Marin, Rrahmani, Badiashile; Di Lorenzo, Gilmour, Lobotka, Spinazzola; Neres, De Bruyne; Hojlund.
Frosinone (4-2-3-1): Palmisani; Oyono, Calvani, Monterisi, Bracaglia; Masini, Calo; Ghedjemis, Schmid, Kvernadze; Bobcek.
Napoli vs Frosinone Prediction
Despite being in far better shape ahead of Saturday’s kickoff, Frosinone could be out of their depth here. With key first-team stars returning to the fold, Napoli look all set to bounce back from recent slumps and draw level with their resilient visitors on ten points.
