Report – Juventus Join Inter & Napoli in Race to Sign Monza Rising Star
Juventus have joined the growing list of clubs monitoring Monza striker Gustavo Varela, whose sensational start to the season has attracted interest from several Serie A heavyweights. According to Calciomercato.it, the Bianconeri sent a scout to Friday’s match between Torino and Monza to assess the young forward, who continued his impressive scoring run despite his team’s 3-2 defeat.
The 21-year-old striker found the net with a delicate finish over goalkeeper Alberto Paleari, taking his Serie A tally to seven goals and drawing level with Antonio Raimondo at the top of the scoring charts. Varela has also scored twice in the Coppa Italia, bringing his overall return to nine goals in eight appearances.
Varela’s outstanding start to his first season in Italian football has inevitably attracted attention beyond Turin. Inter and Napoli are also keeping tabs on the former Benfica youngster, with the Nerazzurri sporting director Dario Baccin recently watching him in action at the Brianteo.
Our Take on Juventus & Varela
Varela joined Monza for €3.5 million, with Benfica retaining a 20% sell-on clause, and signed a contract running until June 2030. His market value has since soared to around €20m, with further increases possible if he maintains his current scoring rate.
Monza are determined to retain their prized asset during the January transfer window rather than entertain mid-season offers. However, the club could consider a lucrative sale next summer if interest from Italy’s leading sides intensifies.
Juventus, meanwhile, continue to assess their attacking options as they plan for future transfer windows. Varela’s age, finishing ability, and immediate impact in Serie A make him an intriguing prospect, as they’ve yet to find a suitable replacement for Dusan Vlahovic, who joined Besiktas in the summer.
