Players panic: Emiliano Martinez lies motionless on the grass after a horrific collision
Chelsea faced a worrying incident during Saturday afternoon's away match against Everton. Goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez lay motionless on the pitch after a heavy second-half collision with former PSV loanee Jarrad Branthwaite. The Argentine received treatment for several minutes before Mike Penders replaced him.
In the 66th minute of the Premier League match at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, Everton won a free-kick. Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall swung it into the penalty area. Martínez and Branthwaite both went for the ball with conviction, but their heads collided heavily.
Both players went down immediately. Branthwaite got back to his feet after a while, but Martínez remained motionless. The players frantically called for medical help, and several members of the medical staff rushed onto the pitch to treat the Argentine.
When a stretcher came onto the pitch, concern grew further. Martínez lay on the grass for several minutes as medical staff took their time to examine him thoroughly. Television showed no replay of the collision.
Substitute goalkeeper Mike Penders was called to the touchline while Martínez was still receiving treatment. The 21-year-old Belgian received instructions before it became clear Martínez could not continue. Penders took his place in goal.
For Penders, the enforced appearance marked his official Premier League debut for Chelsea.
