NYCFC vs Nashville SC preview: The biggest challenge of the season
After playing a few matches on the road, New York City FC will return home this weekend to play the most challenging game of the season. The Bronx side will face Nashville SC at a time when the players are struggling to get meaningful results. The Pigeons are in the middle of a five-game winless streak, losing twice and drawing three times.
What makes this such a tough game is that Nashville SC is the best team in Major League Soccer. The Music City side sits in first place in the Eastern Conference, currently leads the standings for the Supporters’ Shield, and has only lost twice. In their last four MLS fixtures, which have all ended in wins, they have scored 12 goals.
Things might look bleak for NYCFC, but at least there is good news. Not only is Aiden O’Neill back for the first time since the World Cup break, but for the first time in 2026, Alonso Martínez is also back! The Costa Rican has not played since he tore his ACL while with his national team in November. But he is off the injury list and available. Notably, that does not mean he will play. That does not matter, because the fact that he is back is what matters.
Hopefully, the good news will highlight the match, but it would not be shocking to see the Boys in Blue struggle. Here is a preview of the game between NYCFC and Nashville SC.

Weather
After a week of heavy rain, storms, clouds, and truly dull weather, anyone attending the game will be treated to a nice night. It will be partly cloudy with only a 2% chance of rain. It will be around 78 degrees, and the humidity will be about 60%. It will be slightly sticky out, for the dew point will be around 62.
Injury report
Drew Baiera (leg), Arnau Farnós (leg), Talles Magno (leg), Maxi Moralez (leg), Keaton Parks (leg), Kai Trewin (leg), and Hannes Wolf (leg) are unavailable against Nashville.
Players to watch
Nicolás Fernández Mercau is the player to watch on NYCFC. Thankfully, he is still here despite transfer rumors, and now the team’s best player has a chance to become the hero that the Pigeons desperately need. The Argentine is the leading scorer, and after his incredible goal against Toronto FC last week, another goal or two might give the home side a chance of winning. He needs to perform at a high level, though, throughout the entire game.
Fans should also watch Nashville’s Sam Surridge. He has 13 goals this season, and he has been one of the top forwards in MLS over the last few years. While there are plenty of threats in the attack, he is one that the Pigeons must keep out of the back of the net.
Prediction
As much as the Bronx side needs a win, that will not happen. It is predicted that Nashville SC will beat NYCFC 4-1. The first half will be a good half, but the second half will see the team fall apart once again.
