Ruben Amorim’s reported selection decisions ahead of AC Milan’s game against RB Salzburg could well end up being a big risk.

As MilanNews write, the Europa League may not be the ‘Cup with the Big Ears’ that Milan have won seven times in their history, but this current squad can’t afford to ignore the Europa League. Indeed, it could be a crucial part of the club’s rebuilding.

Winning the trophy also guarantees access to next season’s Champions League, and after the home defeat against Benfica in their debut, the trip to Salzburg could already have a significant impact on Milan’s European campaign.

Risky rotation

Amorim, however, seems intent on making significant changes, focusing on those players who haven’t been given much playing time this season.

As he hinted at in his pre-match press conference, the Portuguese coach is expected to roll out a significantly rotated side. Francesco Camarda, Fikayo Tomori and Omari Hutchinson are all candidates for starting spots, with rest being given to the ‘regular’ starters.

Amorim’s move is bold, but also risky. Salzburg are the youngest team in the entire European competition, with an average age of just 23.1, and will be able to count on the enthusiasm of 18,000 spectators who make the Red Bull Arena a fortress on a cold night.

However, Milan cannot hide behind rotations or a schedule, especially since – despite Cardinale’s confidence in Amorim’s work – the owners expect clear signs of growth from the team in performances and results.
