Manchester United are reportedly interested in signing Fulham defender Calvin Bassey as Michael Carrick looks to address his side’s defensive problems ahead of the January transfer window.

According to a report from TEAMtalk, the Red Devils have identified the Nigerian international as a potential defensive addition, with his versatility and Premier League experience making him an attractive option.

Calvin Bassey could be an ideal defensive addition

The 26-year-old has established himself as a key member of Fulham’s squad, delivering consistent performances at the heart of their defence. His ability to operate at both centre-back and left-back could make him particularly valuable for Manchester United.

Carrick’s side have struggled with defensive injuries this season, while the availability of Luke Shaw and Patrick Dorgu has also been a concern. Bassey could provide much-needed competition in both positions and help improve the club’s defensive depth.

The former Rangers and Ajax defender possesses considerable physical strength, recovery pace and the ability to contribute effectively in possession. His experience in English football would also help him adapt quickly without a lengthy settling-in period.

United are not the only club interested in securing his services, however. Newcastle United and Everton are reportedly monitoring his situation, while Inter Milan, Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig have also been credited with interest.

Manchester United face competition for Bassey

However, completing a deal could depend on Fulham’s willingness to negotiate. Bassey’s current contract expires next summer, although the London club have an option to extend his stay by another year.

His contract situation could make him an attractive option for United, particularly if Fulham become concerned about losing him without a substantial transfer fee.

Uncertainty around Lisandro Martinez’s future at Old Trafford could further increase the need for defensive reinforcements.

United are expected to continue assessing their options before making a formal approach. Bassey’s versatility, physical attributes, and Premier League experience make him an appealing target, and he could be a sensible addition as Carrick looks to strengthen his defensive department.
