Manchester City vs Paris Saint-Germain match preview
Can Paris Saint-Germain claim a statement victory, as they seek to prove they are genuine Champions League contenders once again? Since being semi-finalists in 2024, les Parisiennes' European record is miserable. They were ignominiously ousted in qualifying by Juventus just a few months later, before finishing second-bottom of the inaugural league phase, failing to win a game.
Well, Paulo César's team have already bettered last year's points tally. First, les Rouge-et-Bleu came from a goal down to draw with Real Madrid at Estadio Alfredo Di Stéfano, courtesy of Sakina Karchaoui's late spot-kick. Then, PSG demolished OH Leuven 5-0, with Naomie Feller bagging a quick-fire double in Poissy.
This represents a great start but, after this, PSG still have to face Bayern Munich, Chelsea and then Juventus, underlining that every point counts. So, can they claim a statement victory on the road?
As for Manchester City, they are targeting a first victory of this season's league phase, even if one could certainly argue they have made an impressive start. Andrée Jeglertz's team have drawn both fixtures to date, first fighting back from 2-0 down against Bayern Munich; Carlotta Wamser the scorer of a late equaliser at Sportpark Unterhaching.
Then, Bunny Shaw was the scorer as the Sky Blues draw 1-1 with Real Madrid visited Joie Stadium earlier this month.
Many are tipping Man City are potential winners of the Champions League this season. They had begun their WSL title defence with six straight victories, before Sunday night's 1-1 draw in the Manchester derby, denied victory in Leigh right at the death.
Meantime, in the Champions League, the Citizens' hardest fixtures have all come first. After this, they take on Internazionale Milano and BK Häcken on the road, before hoisting Austria Wien on the final matchday, all matches they will be expected to win. Here however, this clash could go either-way, so can Paris Saint-Germain replicate what their men's team achieved across the road a fortnight ago and win in Manchester?
Manchester City team news
Bunny Shaw is undeniably Manchester City's most dangerous attacker. The Jamaican striker finished third in the Ballon d'Or Féminin ranking on Monday, having scored nine goals in nine appearances already this season.
Meantime, Beth Mead, Vivianne Miedema, Sam Coffey Risa Shimizu are all sidelined for the hosts.
Paris Saint-Germain team news
Paulo César made eight changes against Montpellier on Friday, reaction to the 4-0 hammering at the hands of Lyon, with Griedge Mbock Bathy, Jennifer Echegini and Emilie Østerås the only players to start both.
Nevertheless, all the big guns will return here, including captain Sakina Karchaoui, who has scored four goals in her last three Champions League appearances. Goalkeeper Katarzyna Kiedrzynek is sidelined, so Oliwia Szperkowska will continue to deputise.
Predicted Line-ups
Manchester City predicted lineup: Yamashita; Casparij, Rose, Greenwood, Wamser; Hasegawa, Blindkilde, Fujino, Fowler, Hemp; Shaw.
Paris Saint-Germain predicted lineup: Szperkowska; Isabela, Samoura, Mbock, Elimbi Gilbert; Østerås, Echegini, Jourde; Karchaoui, Feller, Estella Lafontaine.
Score prediction: Manchester City 3-1 Paris Saint-Germain.
