Lauren James faces hamstring assessment with Everton and Manchester City games ahead
Lauren James limped out of Chelsea Women's 6-0 win at Charlton with a hamstring problem and is being assessed further. The timing is awkward, with home games against Everton and title rivals Manchester City to come in the next fortnight.
A hamstring problem brought Lauren James’s afternoon at The Valley to an early end. The injury came during Chelsea’s Women’s Super League win over Charlton Athletic on Sunday 1 November 2026.
Her exit followed an influential opening spell. James started on the left of the front line. Nathalie Bjorn opened the scoring in the 3rd minute. Melvine Malard struck in the 10th and 19th minutes, either side of an Ellie Carpenter goal in the 13th. Aggie Beever-Jones and Giulia Dragoni added second-half goals in the 57th and 66th minutes.
Sonia Bompastor could only confirm afterwards that the problem was with James’s hamstring. The player was likely to be assessed the following day for more detailed information. Bompastor expected a clearer idea of how serious the injury is on Monday 2 November.
A hamstring injury in April 2025 ended James’s season
Supporters have seen this before. In April 2025 Chelsea announced that James had a hamstring injury and would be out for a period of time. She had been taken off at half-time in England’s 5-0 win over Belgium. That injury sidelined her for the end of the season.
It also kept her out of the first leg of Chelsea’s Champions League semi-final against Barcelona, which they lost 4-1, Goal reported. At the time, Bompastor said she was not concerned but would not give a date for James’s return. She added that hamstring injuries in women’s football can be serious.
That episode shows what is at stake. Without James, Chelsea lost one of their most important attacking players at a decisive point of the campaign.
Everton and Manchester City visit Stamford Bridge next
James’s importance to Bompastor was clear from the team sheet. She kept her place even though the head coach made seven changes, bringing in Keira Walsh, Malard and captain Bjorn.
Chelsea went into the game ahead of second-placed Manchester City only on goal difference. The win took them back to the top of the table.
A long absence for James would leave Bompastor without a key forward for the fixtures that could shape the title race.
Chelsea’s next game is against Everton at Stamford Bridge on Saturday 7 November, kicking off at 12.45pm and shown live on Sky Sports. A week later, on Saturday 14 November, they host Manchester City at Stamford Bridge, with a 1.30pm kick-off live on BBC One.
