Kings of the records in danger: four beasts declare war on the legacy of Messi and Ronaldo
An impossible succession or the dawn of a new era?
The departure of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo from the international scene was not merely the end of two of the greatest careers in football history. It lowered the curtain on an exceptional era that will be hard to repeat. Both stars left behind record numbers and achievements that could take decades to break.
While the world is still coming to terms with the absence of the pair who ruled football's throne for more than two decades, a new generation has begun to impose itself. Four names are tipped to carry the banner and chase the historic legacy of the Portuguese and Argentine icons, led by Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland, alongside Harry Kane and Lamine Yamal, according to the Spanish newspaper "AS".
For more than 20 years, Messi and Ronaldo were an exceptional phenomenon in world football. Their rivalry was not confined to clubs but extended to the international stage, where each left a mark that is difficult to erase.
Ronaldo left the international scene after 234 matches in a Portugal shirt, scoring 146 goals and becoming the player with the most appearances and goals in the history of national teams. He led his country to the European Championship title in 2016 and two UEFA Nations League titles in 2019 and 2025.
Messi, meanwhile, ended his international career after 208 matches in an Argentina shirt, scoring 126 goals and leading his nation to the 2022 World Cup title, along with two Copa América crowns in 2021 and 2024.
Ironically, despite long years of competing for the summit of the game, the two stars faced each other only twice in their respective national shirts. Both were friendlies. The first came in 2011 in Geneva and ended 2-1 to Argentina, with both Messi and Ronaldo scoring for their countries. The second took place in 2014 in Manchester, where Portugal won by a single unanswered goal and neither star found the net.
Their exit leaves a huge void. The numbers, though, point to four stars who possess the attributes to chase some of those achievements, even if repeating the duo's feats looks an extremely difficult task.
Haaland and Mbappé top the list in terms of scoring, each producing exceptional numbers with his national team. Kane brings vast international experience, while Yamal looks one of the most prominent talents capable of writing a long history with Spain.
Haaland: a Norwegian goal machine
Aged 26, Erling Haaland looks one of the leading candidates to chase the historic scoring numbers. He has scored 65 goals in just 59 international matches, a rate of more than a goal per game.
The Manchester City striker did not stop at breaking individual records. He played a decisive role in returning Norway to the ranks of teams capable of competing with the big nations, helping them qualify for the World Cup for the first time in 28 years.
Haaland has also surpassed his country's previous record of 33 goals, held by Jørgen Juve, to become Norway's all-time top scorer with a stunning rate of roughly a goal every 71 minutes.
Mbappé: the most ready heir
On the other side, Real Madrid's Kylian Mbappé boasts an exceptional international record that makes him one of the closest players to matching Messi and Ronaldo.
The France striker has scored 67 goals in 107 international matches, overtaking Olivier Giroud's previous record of 57 to become his country's all-time top scorer. He has also provided 40 assists.
Mbappé's ambitions go beyond scoring numbers. He netted 22 goals across three World Cup finals to become the tournament's all-time top scorer, surpassing legendary names, and he was crowned champion with France in 2018.
Now 27, the France captain has a golden opportunity to boost his numbers and keep chasing the legacy left by the legendary duo.
Harry Kane: numbers without a crown
At 33, Harry Kane cannot be ruled out from the list of candidates to keep chasing the records. He has proved one of the most consistent strikers at international level.
The England captain has played 125 international matches and scored 91 goals, topping the Three Lions' all-time charts by a huge margin over Wayne Rooney's 53.
Kane has also provided 23 assists for his country, confirming his great value on the international stage, although his record still lacks major titles. He has yet to win a single trophy with England.
Lamine Yamal: the youngest of the chasers
Lamine Yamal represents the long-term bet, given his exceptional talent and young age. He began his international journey with Spain at 16.
The Barcelona star has played 36 international matches, scoring 11 goals and providing 13 assists, and he has already won the European Championship with Spain.
Yamal has delivered striking performances in his country's shirt. The most prominent came in the Euro 2024 semi-final against France, when he scored a wonderful goal to help send Spain into the final.
The young winger has plenty of time to build his numbers and chase the great scorers, with his international career still in its early stages. That makes him one of the most prominent names tipped to leave a historic mark in the coming years.
Despite the stunning numbers the quartet produce, reaching what Messi and Ronaldo achieved remains an exceptional challenge. It is not only about scoring goals or breaking records. It is about the ability to stay at the summit for more than two decades and keep competing at the highest level with club and country.
The duo left a legacy that goes beyond statistics and titles. They redrew the standards of excellence in modern football, which is why their potential successors are not chasing mere records but trying to reach a status many have failed to come close to.
