Sometimes, when a player leaves their club as a free agent, especially if it's their boyhood club, fans don't take too kindly to their departure, and that was exactly the case with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Liverpool fans. Fans feel hard done by his departure, feeling Liverpool gave Trent everything just for him to leave for Real Madrid without hesitation.

Trent's time at the Bernabeu hasn't gone the way anyone was expecting, prompting rumors of a possible return to Anfield in the summer. The response from all Liverpool fans has been a hard no; however, one former player has a different stance on a possible reunion.

While speaking on The Overlap, Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher was asked whether he would welcome Trent Alexander-Arnold back at Liverpool after his controversial exit for Real Madrid last summer, and his answer may be one that would surprise some fans: he said yes.

I'd have him back. Give him plenty of stick, [because] I think he made a mistake. I think he made a big mistake. But, as I said, if something benefits Liverpool Football Club going forward… And when you think of the problems Liverpool have in terms of the right-back. Ronnie [Ronald Araujo] has been fantastic, but we do have a problem in terms of full-backs passing. We've definitely missed his creativity.

Carragher ready to let bygones be bygones with Trent Alexander-Arnold

The 28-year-old arrived at the Bernabeu as a free agent last summer and hasn't had the easiest of time in the Spanish capital. He struggled with injuries for much of his first season, and he isn't a preferred option for Jose Mourinho this year, with the manager preferring to play Fede Valverde at right-back and calling on Denzel Dumfries as a substitute ahead of the Englishman. He's made just seven appearances so far this season, with his career at the Bernabeu already looking unfortunately grim.

His situation has led to these rumors of a possible departure with Chelsea and Liverpool both interested, but whether or not a transfer will happen remains unknown.

A return to Liverpool would definitely be quite the talking point given the anger from fans when he left, but as Carragher said, Trent returning to Liverpool would be a major help to the Premier League side. His creativity is exactly what Real Madrid has been lacking, but they have somehow failed to use the player properly, and with his situation not showing signs of improving anytime soon, as the old saying goes: go where you're valued.

He was a key player in the success achieved by Liverpool during his time at the club, and despite his exit leaving a sour taste in fans' mouths, he is still a legend at Anfield and will no doubt be welcomed back should he push to leave Real Madrid in the future.
