‘It was only a matter of time before Wout Weghorst thanked his Creator’
Hugo Borst has admitted he 'wasn't annoyed by Wout Weghorst for once' on Sunday in his column for Het Algemeen Dagblad.
On Sunday afternoon, Weghorst scored four times in FC Twente's 9-0 win over Excelsior.
Two of his goals stood out, but his second was one to frame. The Netherlands international picked up the ball around halfway, laid it off with a backheel, received it back further up the pitch and played another backheel. He then combined with Sondre Orjasaeter before firing into the far corner with his left foot.
"I have to admit I watched the goal, a sublime culmination of a quick counter-attack, 23 times," Borst begins. "As a critic of Wout, you hope you saw it wrong. Because some things simply cannot be true."
The journalist continues: "The goal was a miracle. Not from God, of course (he doesn't exist, after all), although I was waiting for Wout to thank his Creator."
After the goal, Borst found he could enjoy Weghorst's reaction too: "Good heavens, what a world-class goal. He immediately had that EO-like joy on his face, and this time it didn't annoy me. All his strange antics, including the low point of those scenes involving Lionel Messi, didn't come to mind at that moment."
"Perhaps all that silliness had never happened. Or it had been cancelled out. Suddenly, I found Wout really likeable, and nice," he concluded his column.
