“I never imagined it would be this tough,” Paulo Bernardo on playing in Poland
Paulo Bernardo admits he’s finding playing his football in Poland ‘tough’ but he’s happy at Gornik Zabrze…
Celtic’s forgotten midfielder
Celtic is suffering from a clear shortage of quality in the midfield area, and one such player who could help with that problem is currently plying his trade elsewhere on the continent.
Celtic’s forgotten midfielder Paulo Bernardo is currently on loan at Polish club Gornik Zabrze. And he’s has admitted he’s finding Polish football a lot tougher than perhaps he first anticipated.
The former Portuguese under 21 skipper temporarily moved from the Scottish Champions in the summer in a bid to get more first team football after falling behind in the pecking order under Martin O’Neill, and has put in some impressive displays for the Polish side title challengers.
Bernardo facing tough challenge in Poland
Yet despite his eye-catching displays, the 24 year old has told of his difficulty in adapting to the rigmaroles of the Polish game, but emphasises that he happy where his is, and believes he can develop more as a footballer playing in such a competitive footballing environment.
Bernardo said as reported by Glasgow Times: “It’s very difficult for me. I never imagined it would be this tough. Even though we are challenging for the top of the league, there are no easy matches for us.”
Paulo added: “But I am very happy to be here and I know I can continue to develop in it.”
Despite his satisfaction, Bernardo has revealed his frustration at failing to find the net for his new club, but hopes his good work will lead to him finding the net more often.
Bernardo eyes first goal in Poland
He explained: “The only frustrating thing for me here is that I have not managed to score yet. I have to keep working, trying, creating chances and running into spaces where I can shoot.
“I hope this will pay off soon and I can score my first goal for the club.”
We can only wish Paulo well, as he’s a decent guy and more importantly he’s a fantastic footballer, which makes Martin O’Neill’s decision to send him out on loan all that more baffling.
Luke McCowan has struggled this season
Luke McCowan has struggled for confidence this season after initially catching Martin O’Neill’s eye. It’s hard to see him making much of a contribution this season. Many will believe that Bernardo offered much more and could play as a six alongside Callum McGregor, allowing Mika Baur to play in a more advanced role.
That could have been a sensible solution to Celtic’s midfield which will continue to be exposed as a weakness by savvy opposition coaches. Watch Dundee United try their luck tomorrow night!
