Gotham FC vs Orlando Pride preview: A tightening NWSL Shield race

With two games to go, NJ/NY Gotham FC's lead in the race for their first-ever NWSL Shield has shrunk to just one point. A 1-1 draw with Angel City FC and a 1-0 loss to the Washington Spirit on either side of the most recent international break, combined with two wins for the second-place San Diego Wave FC, has seen their points lead vanish in just two match weeks. Sunday's matchup with the Orlando Pride provides a good opportunity for them to earn a much-needed three points.

Despite still being in control of their own destiny, the odds are stacked against Gotham FC with just two weeks to go in their quest for the Shield. An away trip to Orlando precedes a home match on Decision Day with Utah Royals FC, who may still need the game presents a somewhat difficult end to 2026. Combine that with San Diego having Boston Legacy FC and Bay FC, two teams eliminated from playoff contention, and the schedule very much favors the second-placed side. Three points on Sunday will be crucial for the Bats to win their first NWSL Shield.

One positive is that the Pride basically has nothing left to play for. They have been eliminated from playoff contention for the first time since 2023, and they will be without MVP contender Barbra Banda. The forward is under travel restrictions after playing an Olympic qualifying match in Uganda during the most recent international break for Zambia. With nothing to play for in 2026 and their full focus seemingly on 2027, who will the NJ/NY side face? Will it be a carefree team that goes all out for a win, or a disengaged group with more of a focus on 2027?

Gotham will again be facing an uphill battle when it comes to injuries. During his pre-match media availability, head coach Juan Carlos Amorós confirmed that both Jaedyn Shaw and Rose Lavelle will be absent from Sunday's match and that while Sofia Cook, who has missed significant time with an ankle injury, will be on the game-day roster, she isn't expected to play in the game either. Here is a preview of Sunday's game.

Gotham FC vs Orlando Pride preview

Date

The game will take place on Sunday, October 25.

Time

The fixture is scheduled to begin at 3:00 PM ET.

Location

The match will be played at Inter.co Stadium in Orlando, Florida.

How to watch

The battle will be broadcast on CBS Sports Network.

Weather

It looks like a warm and windy afternoon in Orlando, with temperatures in the high 70s and wind speeds up to 18 mph and gusts as high as 30 mph. There is a 40% chance of rain around the midpoint of the match, but only a 10% chance before and after that. Humidity will start at around 60% before rising to near 70% at the end of the match.

Injury report

The injury list is too long for this one. Bruninha (knee- SEI), Jordynn Dudley (foot- SEI), Kayla Duran (knee - SEI), Rose Lavelle (neck), Jaedyn Shaw (knee), and Emily Sonnett (knee - SEI) are out. Sofia Cook (ankle) is questionable.

Players to watch

With multiple players injured, expect some of Gotham's new players to play a bigger role than expected. Olivia Wingate played well in her debut 30-minute cameo last week and may be asked to do even more this week. That is why she is someone to watch.

For Orlando, with Banda not being available on Sunday, this offers a platform for other players to step up and make an impact. Fans should watch Solai Washington, who has had a promising rookie season and scored her first professional goal last week in a 3-1 victory over the Houston Dash. As the Pride evolves and moves forward, Washington looks to be someone who could be a key piece in getting them back to the playoffs in 2027.

Prediction

Despite Orlando having nothing much to play for, this won't be an easy three points for Gotham FC, especially with all of the injuries they are currently battling. That being said, they should have enough to eke out a 1-0 victory, with Sam Kerr finding the back of the net for the first time in three games.
