GdS: Contracts, signings and protection – why Cardinale would find it difficult to sack Amorim

This morning, a report has looked at why it is difficult to imagine Gerry Cardinale sacking Ruben Amorim only a few months into his AC Milan tenure.

It is clear that the discussions surrounding Amorim and his future are not going to disappear. The result on Wednesday did significant damage to Milan and if they fail to win this weekend, there will be even more noise over the next few weeks.

This morning, Gazzetta dello Sport have looked at why Cardinale would struggle to sack Amorim, if a decision needed to be made.

Cardinale’s attachment to Amorim

Firstly, Cardinale decided to go for Amorim himself and he backed him heavily during the window. If he were to sack him, he’d also be very much responsible.

Following that, we’re still in the very early stages of the project. Giving up so soon would send a bad message from the club for potential replacements, whilst it would also send a bad signal for RedBird. When you’re trying to implement a substantial change, there are going to be bumps in the road.

Sacking him, as Gazzetta continues, would also go against what was promised in the summer. After all, Cardinale personally supported Amorim and vowed to protect him, meeting him on his first day and sitting beside him in his press conferences. That protection cannot be broken so soon.

Then there is the mercato; it is clear that the Rossoneri did not get everything sorted that they needed to. So, he cannot really be judged on a squad that is not truly his.

Finally, Amorim signed a three-year deal with the option of a fourth, a commitment that Cardinale has never made before. Breaking that early would be financially difficult, but it also shows that the willingness to give him the time (as the contract would show) was not truly there.
