CorSport: Chukwueze smiles as Amorim makes decision to enhance his strengths
Samuel Chukwueze is one of several players who could benefit from AC Milan’s formation change, with less focus on defensive duties moving forward.
In the opening six games of the season, Ruben Amorim opted for the 3-4-2-1 formation, testing the Milan players in a system that he knows well. However, with a switch to the 4-2-3-1 formation now expected, there are several players who could benefit.
Chukwueze is one of them who, up until this point, has played as a right wing-back. This has forced him to balance defensive and attacking duties when, in reality, we all know that his main strengths are in 1v1 situations in attack.
Chukwueze to defend less
As highlighted by today’s edition of Corriere dello Sport (via MilanNews), with the switch to a four-man backline, the Nigerian won’t have to track back as much. Of course, he will still need to do so, but it’s a very different position compared to wing-back.
Another thing worth considering is that Diego Moreira is set to play on the opposite flank. The Belgian is much more used to balancing defensive and attacking duties, which means he could be the one to track back more, with Amorim allowing the right flank to be more attacking-minded.
It’s something that we often saw with Alexis Saelemaekers and Rafael Leao back in the day, in the same formation by the way, with the former (another Belgian, coincidentally!) being the one to track back then.
So far, Chukwueze has registered two assists and feeling is that he could get a lot more, and hopefully some goals too, in a role that suits him better.
