Breaking: after collapsing unconscious, Kompany taken to hospital
What happened?
Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany suffered a sudden health scare on Friday, collapsing at the club's Säbener Strasse training ground before an ambulance took him to a hospital in Munich, according to German newspaper "Bild".
The incident happened after the 40-year-old Belgian had stopped to watch part of a training session involving Bayern Munich's under-23 side, once the first team had finished.
A helicopter landed at the training ground shortly before, while the club offered no official information about his condition.
This all comes days after Kompany picked up a viral infection that hit his health. He had carried on with his duties regardless, leading Bayern to a thumping 6-1 win over Leipzig last Saturday.
During that game, the report says, Kompany was forced to lie down briefly on the sofa in the dressing room at the "Allianz Arena", both at half-time and after the final whistle.
He rested for a short spell once the match ended, then reportedly began analysing clips on his laptop. The interviews he left to the sporting directors.
Absent from training at "Säbener Strasse" on Monday, the Belgian underwent a fresh comprehensive medical examination, according to "Sport Bild", overseen by doctors including team physician Professor Roland Schmidt.
Health crisis before the Arsenal clash
Kompany could not take the final training session before the Champions League meeting with Arsenal, and he missed the pre-match press conference too. His 43-year-old assistant Aaron Danks stepped in to face the media.
"The most important thing we are encouraging him to do now is to rest and take the time he needs, however long that period may be," Danks said at the time.
Kompany returned to the bench for the Arsenal clash despite the scare. The game ended 2-2, and afterwards he spoke about his battle with the virus, admitting he had not rested his body enough at the start.
"As a coach, you always want to do everything and get everything done," the Bayern Munich manager said after the match. "I caught a strong virus last week, and of course I did not listen to my body, then came the moment when my body told me: stop now!".
For now, the details of Kompany's condition and the circumstances of his hospital transfer remain unclear, pending official word from Bayern Munich on their Belgian coach.
