The price of defeat against Aston Villa

Seven rounds into the Premier League season, the sack race is already heating up. Results have slipped at a number of clubs, and the speculation has started to mount.

A report published by the "Mirror" gathered the views of its writers on the names most likely to be shown the door. Among those under threat sat Matthias Jaissle, the Newcastle manager.

Jaissle endured a chastening afternoon after last Saturday's 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa. Fan discontent boiled over at full time, with the Magpies' supporters booing the German off the pitch as the team's results and standing continued to slide.

Yaisle faces pressure

Nathan Ridley believes Jayssle has been handed a tough job since replacing Eddie Howe, and Newcastle's stated ambition to become "the best club in the world" by 2030 leaves him precious little time.

The German coach needs results fast, Ridley warned, with a run of upcoming fixtures that could decide his fate.

Newcastle face four away trips to Fulham and Crystal Palace, with two meetings against Everton in the cup and the league thrown in.

Fail to pick up at least two wins in that stretch and Jayssle could find himself in serious trouble, Ridley reckons. A harder run awaits against Arsenal, Brighton and Manchester United, building towards the Sunderland derby.

Speculation over a return to the Saudi league

With pressure mounting on Matthias Jaissle at Newcastle, speculation has once again returned regarding the German coach's connection to the Saudi Pro League, particularly with his former club Al-Ahli.

Former Al-Shabab and Saudi national team star Ahmed Atif told the Dawrina Ghair programme: "It seems Jaissle is doing his warm-up exercises to return to the Saudi league. He is a coach and he has ideas. He could return to Al-Ahli." He made clear at the same time that if it were up to him he would not bring the German coach back, because of the way he left.

A section of Al-Ahli's fans have also voiced their desire for Jaissle to return, launching a campaign on X after his defeat to Aston Villa.

Jaissle walked out on Al-Ahli in shocking fashion less than two weeks before the start of the current season to take the Newcastle job, having failed to agree a new contract with the Saudi club. He led them for three years, winning the AFC Champions League Elite twice along with the Saudi Super Cup.
