Inter Miami slipped to a 0-2 defeat away at New York Red Bulls in the American league, with Lionel Messi coming off the bench.

The visitors fell behind inside seven minutes when Casemiro turned the ball into his own net. Emil Forsberg of Sweden then doubled the lead deep into stoppage time, finishing off a Cameron Harper pass to settle the contest in the 91st minute.

Sloppy play from the back cost Inter Miami dear, handing their hosts chance after chance. Canadian goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair kept the scoreline down with crucial stops, most notably from Ronald Donkor, Mexico's Jorge Ruvalcaba and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting.

Messi, on for Rikelme Felipe in the 56th minute, tried to drag his side back into it. Inter Miami almost levelled in the 84th minute when Ethan Horvath denied Santiago Morales, and moments later Venezuela's Telasco Segovia rattled the crossbar.

That miss proved fatal. Forsberg struck the second in the dying moments to finish the job.

Defeat or not, Inter Miami sit second in the Eastern Conference on 55 points, 15 behind Nashville. According to Mundo Deportivo, Nashville have mathematically wrapped up the Supporters' Shield, awarded to the side with the best regular-season record, after their 2-0 win over Montreal.

With three matches still to play, Nashville have reached 70 points and claimed the title for the first time in their history.
