New York City FC will welcome Atlanta United FC on Wednesday to the Big Apple. Specifically, the teams will play at Citi Field, right across the way from the Pigeon’s future home. More importantly, it will be the second-to-last home match of the season, making this a vital game.

While NYCFC is not out of contention for the postseason, it is easy to believe that they will not make it. After all, that is the expectation. Yet, they would like to see the players put on a show and earn three points in both upcoming home games, especially against Atlanta. After all, they had a disappointing draw last month when they should have won.

However, the Pigeons have only won four times at home in 2026, so even then, against a team below them in the Eastern Conference, it makes sense to think that the team will lose or draw. Winning, though, will keep them in the running for a postseason spot. But if they lose, and either the New York Red Bulls or Columbus Crew win their matches, then the Queens side will be officially eliminated. A draw and a Red Bull win would also guarantee the team finishes below the playoff line.

At this point, fans just want to see a win at home. Here is a preview of NYCFC’s game against Atlanta United.

NYCFC vs Atlanta United preview

Date

NYCFC and Atlanta will play a midweek match on Wednesday, October 28.

Time

The fixture will begin at 7:30 PM ET.

Location

As mentioned, the match can be seen at Citi Field in Flushing, Queens, New York.

How to watch

The game can be seen on Apple TV.

Weather

A cool fall evening will be the theme of Wednesday’s weather. It will be around 57 degrees and partly cloudy. The humidity will be close to 70%, and the dew point will be around 47 degrees, making it a very comfortable night.

Injury report

Fans can rejoice, as the injury report is down to four players! Drew Baiera (leg), Arnau Farnós (leg), Maxi Moralez (leg), and Kai Trewin (leg) remain out, but Keaton Parks is off the list.

Players to watch

NYCFC fans should watch Nicolás Fernández Mercau. The Argentine is undoubtedly the team’s MVP for the 2026 season, and they really need him to play at his highest level for a chance at winning at home. Moreover, he is scoreless in his last six fixtures and is likely desperate for a goal. If his hunger comes out, then he should find the back of the net.

Atlanta’s Miguel Almirón is another player to watch. The midfielder is a legend for the Five Stripes and has six goals this season. His overall play is what makes him a threat. His energy and speed can make him difficult to defend, which is why nobody can have any flat feet around him.

Prediction

Who knows what will happen? Perhaps the Pigeons will shock everyone and play very well. If they limit the mistakes and score at least twice, and if Matt Freese has a good night between the sticks, provided that he plays despite not being on the injury report, then NYCFC will win 2-1. But if play is poor for even one half of the match, or if a lone mistake is made, then do not be shocked if the game ends in another 2-2 draw.
