Moretto states former Marseille director Benatia offered himself to Milan: “Should they call”
Mehdi Benatia is no stranger to Italian football, and he would happily return to Italy to join AC Milan as their sporting director.
Most will know Benatia for his time on the pitch, playing for Udinese, Roma, Bayern Munich and Juventus before his career tailed off. However, some may know him also for his work off the field as a sporting director.
Indeed, the Moroccan joined Marseille in 2023 and remained at the club until the end of last season, when the parties split. In his first full season, he helped the club to a second placed finish in Ligue 1, and last season, they finished a respectable fifth after issues on and off the field.
It was by no means an easy job, but he made several moves of interest across Europe and their €50m profit this summer was largely thanks to him, even if he wasn’t a part of it.
Benatia returning to Italy?
Now, he could return to Italy and he’s offered himself to Milan, as Matteo Moretto stated (via MilanNews) on Fabrizio Romano’s YouTube channel.
“AC Milan is continuing to explore how to improve the club’s sporting organization. Cardinale is pursuing this search; it’s all in his hands, and he’s evaluating the right candidate to bring into an already established structure.
“As of today, there’s no clear name yet; further discussions and contacts are expected in the coming weeks.
“I’d like to highlight the profile of Medhi Benatia, former defender and former sporting director of Marseille, who would be happy to return to work in Italy, a country he knows very well. Benatia has expressed his full availability to AC Milan should they call.
“AC Milan is currently pursuing this casting call, and we’ll see what happens.”
