Arsenal vs Lille: 3 key battles as Olivier Giroud makes Emirates return

Arsenal's Champions League campaign continues when they host Lille at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday night.

The Gunners will be looking to build on their exceptional first outing in Europe's elite club competition back in September, when Mikel Arteta's men generated over four expected goals and emerged with a 1-0 win away at Napoli. Lille will provide Arteta's side with an interesting test, with Davide Ancelotti's aggressive and high-octane style a potentially challenging match-up to the Spaniard's control-oriented approach.

These early League Phase games have come to feel somewhat stakeless, with top-24 qualification almost guaranteed and top-eight qualification likely for the North Londoners.

Nonetheless, this clash against the Ligue 1 side is hugely important for Arsenal in terms of restoring optimism around Arteta's team's performances. Dubious displays against Brighton and Leeds have raised the concern levels amongst Gunners supporters, so it's pivotal the players keep morale around N5 high with a more convincing showing against Lille.

While Premier League-centric fans often dismiss the quality of Ligue 1 outfits, Lille might surprise the Arsenal faithful on Tuesday. Les Douges finished third in the French top flight last season and boast an array of impressive players.

This won't be a walk in the park for the Gunners. With that said, here are the key battles that we believe could be pivotal in dictating the outcome of the game at the Emirates.

Bukayo Saka vs Romain Perraud

Arsenal fans might remember Romain Perraud from his days at Southampton between 2021 and 2023. The left-back is now plying his trade in northeastern France, and has established himself as one of the most accomplished defenders in his home country.

That said, the former Saint has just turned 29 and is losing some of the athleticism that first secured him a move to the Premier League when he was a youngster at Brest at the end of the 2010s. Bukayo Saka, despite enduring a slightly below-par start to the season, remains Arsenal's most potent attacker, and he could have a field day against Perraud.

If the Gunners' starboy comes out on top in this particular battle, it'll be a long night for Ancelotti's team.

Ezri Konsa vs Olivier Giroud

This match is appropriately being dubbed the 'Olivier Giroud homecoming', largely because there is little else to build the narrative around for this routine League Phase encounter. The amusing thing is, Giroud may not actually start.

The veteran Frenchman is planning to retire shortly and is subsequently being used sparingly at Lille, having turned 40 two weeks ago. He started against Le Havre on Saturday and was hooked just before the hour mark, meaning he may not be handed another start just days later.

That said, if Ancelotti succumbs to the romantic narrative of letting the old man play against the club where he made a name for himself, then a fascinating battle against Ezri Konsa could ensue. Giroud will undoutedly pin himself to the former Aston Villa man rather than Gabriel Magalhaes, and while he won't do the Arsenal centre-back for pace, his link-up play remains threatening.

Supported by runners in Nottingham Forest loanee Dilane Bakwa and Kylian Mbappe's younger brother, Ethan (who is actually set to miss this game through injury), Giroud is the perfect backboard striker for pacey wide men. Konsa needs to stop him from playing this game.

Martin Odegaard vs Nabil Bentaleb

Another former Premier League star awaits the Gunners on Tuesday night. It'll be interesting to see whether the Emirates crowd remembers Nabil Bentaleb from his Tottenham days between 2013 and 2016 and subsequently gives him the usual treatment for a former Lilywhites player.

The Algerian left Spurs a calamitous player, but will return to North London as a wise defensive midfielder anchoring an established Champions League team. He'll be tasked with tracking Martin Odegaard's movements and preventing the Norwegian from playmaking.

If he succeeds, he'll prevent Arsenal's creative hub from orchestrating attacks and likely negate the home team's threat significantly.
