Notts County and Salford City battle at Wembley for a place in League One next season.

The regular-season standings held up well in the League Two play-off semi-finals and fourth-placed Salford City will meet fifth-placed Notts County at Wembley on Monday with a place in League One at stake.

There was little between the teams in the regular season with Salford finishing one point ahead on 81 points, while Notts had a goal difference that was 12 superior to the Ammies'.

City had the better of the two meetings between the teams, winning 2-1 at Meadow Lane in August and succeeding by the same score at home last month, but County have been made favourites for the final.

The Magpies saw off a dangerous Chesterfield side in the semis, winning 1-0 away in the first leg before holding out at home with a goalless draw.

Salford also won their opening match, 2-1 at seventh-placed Grimsby Town, but lost the second leg by the same score at the Peninsula Stadium in 90 minutes before progressing with an extra-time goal.

Team news

Notts County have the majority of their squad available for selection at Wembley, with defender Lewis Macari their only absentee due to a lower-leg injury.

Salford are also in good shape, although midfielder Jorge Grant, who missed the last three matches, is set to miss out again.

The stats

Only one of the six goals in the teams' league meetings this season was scored in the first half.

Both teams have scored in four of the teams' last five meetings and Salford have won the last five matches between these two teams.

Notts County are unbeaten in their last four matches.

Alassana Jatta is the Magpies' top scorer with 15 league goals this season.

Salford's Haji Mnoga and Country's Jacob Bedeau have both picked up 11 yellow cards this season.

Prediction

Football League founder members Notts County have been playing below the third tier of English football since 2015, including a four-year spell in the National League, but they can climb to League One with a Wembley win over Salford.

The history books are not the place to look for reasons to back the Magpies, as they have lost six of their seven clashes with the Ammies, but they kept two clean sheets against a solid Chesterfield team in the semi-finals and that should stand them in good stead.

Salford had a chance to seal automatic promotion on the final day of the season, but they could not take advantage of Cambridge being held by Crewe as they laboured to a goalless draw against relegation-threatened Crawley.

There were mixed signals about Salford's big-match nerve from their second leg against Grimsby as they lost 2-1 at home before battling back for an extra-time success.

With three added-time goals scored in the last meeting between these two teams, another frantic contest is possible, but County's defensive solidity, coupled with the attacking verve of top scorer Alassana Jatta and the creative Jodi Jones and Nick Tsaroulla can see them come out on top.
