Barcelona’s latest move to secure a homegrown talent follows a rapid rise from La Masia into Hansi Flick’s first-team plans. The Catalan club have renewed Xavi Espart’s contract through June 2030, with the 19-year-old establishing himself in the senior side during the 2026-27 season.

MARCA reported the official renewal on 8 October 2026, describing Espart as an academy graduate who has consolidated his first-team role this season. The agreement extends his relationship with Barcelona by two campaigns, and the publication reported that it includes an adjustment to his salary.

Espart joined La Masia in the summer of 2015 from UE Vilassar de Mar, the club in his hometown, as a benjamín player. His route to the senior side has gathered pace: he moved into Flick’s first-team group last season, featuring in six matches, starting once against Sevilla in LaLiga and playing 189 minutes.

His performances in pre-season drew particular attention from Flick, and Espart has since become an important option in the first-team defence, especially at left-back. He can also play at right-back and in midfield, a range of roles that has helped him compete for opportunities across the back line.

MARCA reported that Espart has at times moved ahead of Alejandro Balde in the starting XI and has alternated starts with Joao Cancelo. He has also made an early attacking contribution, scoring his first senior goal against Levante in Barcelona’s 4-2 win.

The versatile defender is also a Spain Under-21 international. His ability to cover both full-back positions and midfield has become a defining feature of his emergence, while his progress places him among Barcelona’s promising players born in 2007, alongside Lamine Yamal, Pau Cubarsí and Marc Bernal.

For a closer look at Espart’s first-team breakthrough and versatility, his rise this season provides the clearest sporting context for the renewal. The extension also reflects the value Barcelona place on developing academy players who can contribute in more than one position.

MARCA framed the deal as a sign of the sporting department’s commitment to Barcelona’s future. With his contract now running through June 2030 and his first-team role growing, Espart has a longer runway to continue his development in the squad.
