Video: "Archivo VAR" springs a surprise regarding the Arda Guler incident against Sevilla
"Archivo VAR" have shed new light on the controversy surrounding Real Madrid's Turkish midfielder Arda Guler and Sevilla's Peque Fernandez during the ninth-round meeting in the Spanish league, after the Andalusian club's players demanded a red card for an elbow.
According to "Archivo VAR", the video assistant referee room spent two minutes and 20 seconds working through every available camera angle and still could not intervene. No shot clearly showed where Guler's elbow made contact or how much force was behind it, leaving the officials with nothing decisive to work from.
It all started in the 24th minute. Peque Fernandez tugged Guler's shirt during an attack, the Turkish player swung an elbow and Fernandez went down, sparking furious protests from the Sevilla players and calls for a sending off.
The referee reviewed it with the video technology and produced nothing. Guler escaped without a red card and without a yellow too, because the room can only step in when a player deserves to be dismissed.
Five minutes later, Guler put Real Madrid ahead. That 29th-minute goal only sharpened the arguments over whether he should have been on the pitch at all, and over how much the decision shaped the game.
