Surprise: Tebas threatened with dismissal and a three-year ban after his row with Real Madrid

The ongoing conflict between Javier Tebas and Real Madrid could end with the La Liga president losing his job, on the orders of the Higher Sports Council.

That's according to the "La Sexta" channel, with the report confirmed by the newspaper "Sport". The Higher Sports Council is weighing up action of its own accord against Tebas after he compared the royal club's statements to Nazi declarations.

Real Madrid had already taken aim at the league president, demanding in several statements that he resign.

Tebas hit back directly on his social media accounts. He stood by his position and justified the comparison as being based on "mechanisms that are taught in media faculties".

The case now sits with the legal department of the Higher Sports Council, according to the newspaper. To proceed down this path, someone must lodge a formal complaint with the Administrative Court for Sport, which will then take the final decision on Tebas' future at the head of the Spanish league.

A wave of protests against La Liga and Barcelona swept the Santiago Bernabéu on Sunday during the match against Sevilla.

Fans chanted slogans such as "Tebas, go", "Keep pushing, Laporta", "Corruption in the federation", and "Negreira is still the one pulling the strings".

A large banner went up in the stand set aside for the most ardent supporters, reading: "This is not football, it is Tebas and Negreira".

That section of the fans sits closest to the box belonging to Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez.

One precedent could leave Tebas in a difficult position: the case of Luis Rubiales. The former president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation lost his post in 2023 after he kissed the player Jenni Hermoso without her consent during the final of the Women's World Cup, and made obscene gestures while sitting in the VIP box at the stadium.

The Administrative Court for Sport handed Rubiales a three-year suspension. That's the penalty Tebas could face if the Higher Sports Council decides to submit a complaint to the court.
