Real Madrid agree terms with JJ Gabriel as United face modest training compensation
Real Madrid have a verbal agreement with 16-year-old United forward JJ Gabriel and plan to sign him in January. United stand to receive only modest training compensation for a player who has been winning awards at youth level.
JJ Gabriel looks set to leave Old Trafford for Madrid. Sky Sports reported on 4 November 2026 that Real Madrid have a verbal agreement with the 16-year-old over a move to the Bernabéu. He is still registered with United until the end of the season.
Real have not yet spoken directly to United. Gabriel asked to leave in September. His representatives have asked United to take him off the club’s register straight away so that he can become a free agent.
His family background makes the move possible. Gabriel qualifies for an EU passport through both of his parents. That opening has been described as a FIFA loophole, and it lets him sign a professional contract with a European club.
His camp favours Real mainly because they believe he would have a clear route into the first team there.
United face a small fee for a decorated teenager
The financial return for United looks modest. The club could receive as little as £100,000 in training compensation, Sports Illustrated reported.
United are likely to take legal action to try to secure more. Gabriel’s camp is understood not to be worried by that threat.
The compensation looks small against his record. On 12 May 2026, the Premier League named him the first winner of its Under-18 Player of the Season award. At that point it listed him with 20 goals in 21 league appearances.
He was one of eight players shortlisted by the Premier League Football Development Panel. His nominee profile noted that he had trained with the first-team squad. The club’s own Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award for 2025/26 also went to him. No younger player has ever won it.
Gabriel’s exit tests how United’s youth pathway treats talent
Gabriel had been in line to become United’s youngest-ever player. His departure now raises questions about how the club’s youth pathway, under the Wilcox and INEOS leadership, treats its top talent.
His early-season form showed what United stand to lose. When United beat Sabah 5-0, three of the goals came from Gabriel in his first appearance in Europe’s youth competition. On the same day he could not play in the first team’s Champions League game against Sabah. He had not been named in United’s A-list squad.
Real intend to complete the signing in January. Before that can happen, FIFA must approve the move.
