Real Madrid's trip to Racing Santander on Sunday will be a more important game than people expect, because of the nature of the La Liga title race now. Obviously, on paper, it seems like an easier game than others, due to the fact that Racing Club have just got promoted from the second division, but now, every game is important, especially ones with 'smaller' teams.

Real Madrid will go into the game with the hopes of getting three points, because that is the only way they would be able to remain in contention for the league title. If they lose, the win over Barcelona would mean nothing, which is why a win is absolutely necessary.

Three players will not be helping them achieve their goal, though, and a fourth one could also miss out.

Raul Asencio: out

Raul Asencio has been out since the start of the season, and that will remain the case as he recovers from the surgery on his right leg. The defender will be out until December at the very least, and after that, the hope is that the player is able to provide some meaningful minutes and get the starters some rest.

Ferland Mendy: out

From the 'out' list, Mendy is definitely the closest to returning from injury. He is already training with the rest of the team, and should only be a matter of a couple of matchdays until he returns to the squad list. How much time he will actually get to play due to the options ahead of him at left-back is another topic altogether, but Real Madrid would definitely welcome back Mendy to the squad to at least have an extra man in the team.

Fede Valverde: doubt

According to widespread reports in Spain, Valverde will be available for the game against Racing Club, because scans show no signs of an injury. However, it is worth noting that when he was asked how he was feeling by fans while signing autographs, he said 'not 100% yet', which can only mean that a place in the starting XI could be in doubt. Even if he is fine, Jose Mourinho might keep him on the bench just in case.

Rodrygo: out

Rodrygo is training on grass, but it will be a few more weeks before he can make his season debut for Real Madrid.
