PSG hand Barcelona first defeat of the season as Olmo injury clouds Sunday’s Clásico
Barcelona twice came back to level in Paris, but late goals from Vitinha and Fabián Ruiz gave Paris Saint Germain a 4-2 Champions League win. The loss leaves Hansi Flick's side behind PSG in the league phase and possibly without Dani Olmo against Real Madrid on Sunday.
Barcelona’s winning run ended in Paris on Tuesday 20 October 2026. Paris Saint Germain beat Hansi Flick’s side 4-2 in the third round of the Champions League league phase. They fought back twice to level the score, but PSG scored twice more in the closing stages.
The hosts started fast. Joan García made two saves in the first five minutes, and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia hit the woodwork early on. Désiré Doue opened the scoring in the 38th minute from a João Neves pass. Barcelona went into halftime behind for the first time all season.
Xavi Espart equalized ten minutes after the restart, set up by Fermín López. Ferran Torres, a former Barcelona forward, came on for the injured Ousmane Dembélé and hit the post. Lucas Hernández then headed PSG back in front from a corner in the 72nd minute, with Doue providing the assist. Lamine Yamal leveled again at the 79-minute mark without an assist. Two minutes later, Vitinha restored the lead. Fabián Ruiz sealed it from an Achraf Hakimi pass.
Joan García’s ten saves could not hold off PSG
The statistics point to a busy night for the Barcelona goalkeeper. PSG had 14 shots on goal to Barcelona’s 5, and García made 10 saves. The home side’s expected goals reached 3.74, against 2.25 for Barcelona. Flick’s team had 53% of the ball and completed 472 of 539 passes.
After the game, Flick said his team was tired and had made too many mistakes, ESPN reported. The result follows a 1-2 home defeat to the same opponent on 1 October 2025. Before Paris, Barcelona had beaten Real Betis 5-2 and Galatasaray 4-1.
PSG’s third straight win took them to the top of the league phase, level with Liverpool. The league phase ends on Wednesday 27 January 2027. Aston Villa are the next Champions League visitors to Spotify Camp Nou. That game is on Tuesday 3 November, with kickoff at 21:00 CET.
Olmo’s injury adds to Barcelona’s growing absence list
Dani Olmo was injured and came off midway through the first half. He may have torn his left adductor and could miss around four to five weeks if an MRI confirms it, Barça Blaugranes reported. Olmo would join Eric Garcia, Andreas Christensen and Jules Koundé on the injury list.
The timing is awkward. Barcelona won last season’s Clásico at Spotify Camp Nou 2-0, a result that clinched the club’s 29th LaLiga title. PSG, meanwhile, host Lyon in Ligue 1 the same weekend. Barcelona host Real Madrid at Spotify Camp Nou on Sunday 25 October at 9:00 pm local time, in the first Clásico of 2026/27 and the LaLiga matchday 10 fixture.
