Jose Mourinho completely exposed the one way to beat Barcelona's high line
Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho masterminded a huge win over Barcelona last weekend. Los Blancos were able to win 2-1 at the Camp Nou on Sunday night, and it was beautiful to watch.
Real Madrid were able to completely dominate the team without having much of the ball, and it wasn't anything like the very defensive tactics that people usually expect from Mourinho. In fact, it was one of the most aggressive and brave performances that Real Madrid have had in recent times, and it definitely worked out as well as Mourinho could have possibly hoped for.
Real Madrid were simply the better team on the night, and they were able to create so many good chances for their forwards. It was great to watch, but it wasn't just because of their forwards that they won. It was a collective team effort. Mourinho was able to figure out a way to beat Barcelona's high-line system without using his actual attackers. In fact, he used his midfielders and was able to use a very smart strategy to do it.
After the match, he talked about what he told Eduardo Camavinga to do when he came on, and it absolutely worked like a charm. He said, "I told Camavinga that, sure, many will stay low and protect the defence, and you will attack space. It is difficult for any attackers to attack space against Barcelona. The only solution is to do it with your midfielders.
"When your attackers do it, Barça's defence is prepared and coached for that, and your attackers end up being offside, or the pass ends up being cut by Joan Garcia. The solution is to use midfielders like Camavinga and Bellingham to break that line, and it worked."
Jose Mourinho's still a tactical genius
Everyone knows that Mourinho is an absolute genius when it comes to things like this. He has prepared every single detail tactically for most of his teams. Just when people thought he was past his prime or that he had simply not got it anymore, he was able to prove everyone wrong with the way he set up his team against Barcelona.
There were so many moments where Real Madrid passes to their attackers were cut off by Garcia, and it did not really help them too much. However, there were so many runs by players like Jude Bellingham and Eduardo Camavinga that broke the offside trap set by Barcelona, simply because they were not expecting these players to do it. They were expecting the attackers to do it instead.
There were so many moments where Bellingham broke completely free in attack and was able to help his teammates in the forward areas. If Mourinho had asked attackers to do that, they would have been offside every time, but the reality is Real Madrid only had three offsides the entire match. Clearly, the strategy worked, and Mourinho was able to maximise what he got from his midfielders.
This is something that not many people do against Barcelona. Even the teams that usually beat them try to consistently play their striker offside so that their forwards are able to stay onside in wide areas. Mourinho did not go for that strategy. Instead, he used something that not many big teams have been able to do, and it completely toyed with Barcelona.
Now he has told every single person who watched the game about his strategy, and there is no doubt that people will definitely use it going forward. It is down to Hansi Flick to be able to find a way to minimise the impact on this, but it's really already difficult to manage a high line just with the opposition team's attackers. To now do it with midfielders is going to create so much confusion for his players, and it might not really work out.
Mourinho is very much still a tactical genius, and he proved that once again against one of the best teams in the world.
