A fiery summit in Madrid

The Metropolitano takes centre stage this Sunday evening for the eagerly awaited clash between Atletico Madrid and Barcelona, the standout fixture of matchday 12 in the Spanish league. The atmosphere runs well beyond any simple calculation of points.

Barcelona arrive top of the table on 30 points, level with Real Madrid, who have played one game more, and two clear of second-placed Atletico. That gives the match a double significance in the title race, with the hosts handed the chance to leapfrog their direct rival.

Technical calculations are only part of the heat here. The Julian Alvarez affair casts its shadow over the match, after the Argentine striker was linked with a move to Barcelona last summer. The deal then stalled amid clear tension between the two clubs' managements, which spilled over into traded criticism and official complaints.

Attempts to calm things between Joan Laporta and Atletico's officials have followed, but the match still represents a fresh test for the relationship between the two clubs. It carries particular weight for Alvarez too, thrust into the spotlight against the club he was linked with joining.

The technical circumstances only sharpen the difficulty. Atletico go into the match on a run of seven consecutive league wins, yet they slipped to a 0-2 European defeat against Bayern Munich in midweek, ending a nine-match unbeaten run across all competitions.

Barcelona, for their part, have rediscovered their balance with two big wins, 6-1 over Alaves and 3-0 against Aston Villa, after earlier defeats to Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid.

Significant absences: numbers that tip the scales towards Barcelona

Before the top clash, Barcelona hold a clear attacking edge. They have scored 46 goals in 11 league matches, against 22 for Atletico Madrid. Simeone's men are the stronger defensively, though, having conceded just eight compared to 12 for the Catalans.

Hansi Flick's team still faces a problem on the list of absentees. Midfielder Rodri leads the way after a muscle injury in the Aston Villa match, with Dani Olmo and Roony also sidelined and doubts over the readiness of Jules Kounde, Eric Garcia and Andreas Christensen.

Atletico, meanwhile, are without Cristian Romero and Johnny Cardoso. They do regain important options in midfield, handing Diego Simeone greater flexibility in how he approaches the encounter.

Artificial intelligence's prediction for the result of the top clash

Weighing the two sides' recent results, the attacking and defensive numbers, the impact of the absences and the pull of home ground and crowd, artificial intelligence gives Barcelona a slight advantage, despite the difficulty of the task at Atletico Madrid's stadium.

The closest result on this assessment is a Barcelona win by a score of 2-1, with both sides tipped to score, given the hosts' ability to exploit the spaces behind the Catalan defence.

None of this settles the encounter, mind. A 2-2 draw remains a strong possibility, especially if Simeone manages to disrupt Barcelona's build-up play and cash in on the attacking transitions.
