Barcelona’s next midfield maestro? 16-year-old Dany Freire officially signs contract

The pace of the youth revolution in Catalonia continues to be built. FC Barcelona have completed the recruitment of 16-year-old Portuguese Number 10, Dany Freire, and all contractual formalities are now concluded. After impressing in a trial period, the Portuguese playmaker has cemented his place as a Blaugrana thanks to his technical qualities.

A major emphasis of Barcelona's present sporting project is global recruitment of top young talent to migrate through the famed La Masia system.

Following last season's breakthrough on the senior stage by numerous local homegrown teenagers, the apparent pathway from academy player to first team Barcelona player has rarely been clearer. Freire is the latest to join a growing list of youth academy products who are expected to bring substantial value to the club in the years to come.

Freire, characterised as a pure Number 10, sits within the great Blaugrana vein of attacking midfielders throughout history. He's naturally comfortable controlling the ball in tight spaces, possesses savvy vision, and has a great sense of the half-spaces: the precise qualities that Barcelona historically covets.

In the short term, the teenage prospect will be groomed among the Juvenil teams so that he absorbs the positional play way.
