Barcelona keeping close tabs on Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez
FC Barcelona and Deco are analysing the situation of the Argentine defender at Manchester United and see him as a viable option to reinforce the blaugrana defence.
Hansi Flick needs an out-and-out left-footed ball-playing defender to play alongside Pau Cubarsi and a player such as Lisandro Martinez would fit in perfectly with the German coach’s ideas of play.
A left-footed center-back to solve first-phase problems
Despite Pau Cubarsi anchoring the backline for Barca, Hansi Flick will need cover at center-back and a natural left-footer who can push forward and play out from the back is just what the doctor ordered.
Lisandro Martinez is one of the most progressive central-defenders in the world and has a reputation for being strong in the tackle and excellent in the air. He can also act as an inverted full-back or drop into midfield when required, making him the type of versatile centre-back that Flick has been looking for since his arrival at Camp Nou.
Contractual issues at Manchester United
The Blaugrana sporting director has been keeping a close eye on the Argentine international after recent rumors that suggested that the player’s future at Old Trafford was under review. The situation occurred after the winger had criticized the club’s management for handling business and his contract renewal. It now appears that Martinez is considering a move to La Liga.
Despite the 28-year-old’s current contract situation, Barcelona feel that they could get good value for the Argentine should his future at United become unsure. With both clubs understanding the importance of the player, it remains to be seen if a transfer could materialize. Nevertheless, Deco and the Barcelona board are ready to pounce should the opportunity arise to sign ‘The Butcher’.
