Ballon d'Or 2026: Barcelona coach and young star named best in the world
Spain's Vicky Lopez was crowned the world's best young player at the Ballon d'Or 2026 awards ceremony, presented by France Football magazine, at the London Palladium theatre on Monday evening.
Five players were in contention: Værle Borman, Vicky Lopez, Felicia Schröder, Clara Serrajordi and Lily Yohannes. England star Lucy Bronze handed over the award, and the name she read out was Lopez. The Barcelona player proved yet again that the Catalan club's academy keeps churning out talent.
Ballon d'Or award for best coach 2026
Barcelona's clean sweep did not stop at Lopez. Coach Pere Romeu claimed the award for best coach in the world after an exceptional season that saw him guide Barcelona's women's team to fresh glory.
Spanish coach Rafa Benitez handed over the award, the man behind the famous Miracle of Istanbul, when he led Liverpool to a historic comeback from three goals down to win the Champions League final on penalties.
Romeu is the true architect of Barcelona women's latest stunning campaign. It marked the Catalan club's third trip to the podium, following Lopez and Lamine Yamal, who won the award for best young player.
