Milan risk crashing out of the Europa League after a third defeat in four games, capitulating 2-0 at home to leaders Ferencvaros with a Lenny Joseph cross.

The Rossoneri had their confidence restored by Saturday’s 3-1 Derby della Madonnina victory, but were trailing in Europe after losing two of the first three games. Mike Maignan was sent off in the 3-0 defeat at Bournemouth, so was suspended here and third choice Lorenzo Torriani stepped in, with Pietro Terracciano, Fikayo Tomori, Matteo Gabbia, Samuel Chukwueze, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Alexis Saelemaekers injured, plus Strahinja Pavlovic rested after playing almost every minute this season.

Ferencvaros had a perfect Europa League record after beating Celtic, Viktoria Plzen and Torreense, but missed Krisztian Lisztes, Franko Kovacevic and Daniel Radnoti, with Gergo Szecsi, Bence Otvos, Barnabas Nagy and Isaac Pappoe ineligible.

See how it all unfolded on the Liveblog.

The Hungarians started the better team and tested Torriani with a Kristoffer Zachariassen angled drive, but Ardon Jashari almost gifted them the opener with a misplaced back-pass to send Lenny Joseph clear, the striker scuffing the finish one-on-one with Torriani.

Milan’s first chance was on 39 minutes with Alphadjo Cisse unable to keep the half-volley down on a Goncalo Ramos knockdown from 12 yards, but Joseph tested Torriani at the near post after blazing past Sankhoun Diawara.

Torriani was again forced into a tough save on the Joseph angled drive from 10 yards at the end of a very sluggish first half performance.

Ruben Amorim was as unimpressed as the fans, so made a triple substitution at the break, introducing Christian Pulisic, Diego Moreira and Mario Gila.

They seemed immediately brighter, Omari Hutchinson hitting the side-netting from a tricky angle and Goncalo Ramos with an effort deflected wide.

However, it was Ferencvaros who broke the deadlock when Torriani had a heavy touch, Zachariassen tried to pounce and was perhaps fouled by the goalkeeper, but Joseph turned the loose ball into the empty net to resolve the situation. The defending was again sluggish with nobody warning Torriani that he was under pressure.

Hutchinson’s angled drive shaved a coat of paint off the far post, while Diego Moreira caused problems with a couple of cross-shots and a curler over the bar.

Just as they were pouring forward, they left huge gaps in defence and were caught out on another rapid counter-attack. Zachariasson sprinted from his own half and drew out Torriani, laying it off for the simple Joseph tap-in.

Francesco Camarda came on and turned wide of the near post on a Diego Moreira roll across from the left.

Zachariasson was a constant danger, forcing a great one-handed Torriani save at the near post, and the Gomez free header inches over on the resulting corner.

Ferencvaros went down to 10 men, as Bamidele Yusuf foolishly raised an elbow to Mario Gila’s face in an off the ball incident that was spotted by VAR.

Milan tried to take advantage, but Denes Dibusz stuck out a boot to parry the Hutchinson low drive.

Down to 10 men, Ferencvaros nearly scored a third in stoppages with Madarasz unable to make the most of another defensive error, hitting the side-netting.
