Martin O'Neill and Celtic face an almost impossible task to try and progress in the Europa League.

Stuttgart all but sealed their progress through to the last 16 of the Europa League after a commanding 4-1 victory over Celtic last week in Glasgow.

The Bundesliga side then drew 3-3 with Heidenheim at the weekend, a result which left them fourth in the German league table.

Celtic, however, dropped more points in the race for the Scottish Premiership title as a late winner for Hibs at Parkhead left the Bhoys sitting third in the league, trailing leaders Hearts by six points.

The Scottish side have not won a European knockout tie over two legs since the 2003/04 season and it looks as though this wait will continue into next season.

Team news

The home side will be without the services of Dan-Axel Zagadou, Angelo Stiller, Lazar Jovanovic and Justin Diehl due to injury.

Furthermore, Jeff Chabot will also miss the clash due to suspension.

O'Neill has plenty of first-team players unavailable for this match, with Jota, Cameron Carter-Vickers and Alistair Johnston all still absent.

Arne Engels is another who will not make the trip to Germany and neither will Callum Osmond, with O'Neill's options stretched thin heading into a busy spell for the club over the next few weeks.

The stats

This will be the fourth competitive meeting between these two clubs in European competition.

Both sides sealed a victory each in the fourth round of the UEFA Cup in the 2002/03 season. Celtic won 3-1 at home before losing 3-2 in Germany. It was enough to send them through, however.

Stuttgart have won eight of their 12 matches in all competitions this year so far. Across those wins, both teams have scored in five of them.

Celtic have played 13 games in 2026, winning eight of them. In all three of their defeats, both teams have found the back of the net.

Deniz Undav is Stuttgart's top scorer this season with 17 goals in all competitions for the German side.

Benjamin Nygren has 18 goals for Celtic, making him their highest scorer this term and he is the only Bhoys player to have reached double figures.

Prediction

Celtic travel to Germany having lost back-to-back matches and morale could drop even further on Thursday evening.

Stuttgart are in a commanding position and, unless they suffer a major collapse, look ready to make it through to the last 16.

The visitors will not be ready to pack in the tie just yet and will pose a danger in the final third and they must score first to have any chance of securing progress to the knockout stages.

Expect the home side to record another victory, with both teams getting among the goals.
