Viewers are hugely annoyed by one person at Ajax: ‘Get rid of that bloke!’
Ajax impressed in the first half of Thursday evening's Conference League match against Atalanta Bergamo, but went into the break at a disappointing 0-0. Míchel Sánchez's side created plenty of chances and were clearly the better team at times. Oscar Gloukh, though, drew plenty of criticism on social media.
After just six minutes, Ajax came close to opening the scoring when a deflected shot from Lucas Rosa hit the post. Shortly afterwards, Jorthy Mokio thought he had scored with a magnificent shot, but the goal was ruled out because Davy Klaassen was offside.
While fans liked what they saw from Ajax, Gloukh's choices in the final third frustrated them. The left-sided attacker caught the eye with a good move from the left flank in the 11th minute, but shot well over in the 22nd and had another attempt blocked four minutes later. He chose to shoot again despite having little space, drawing whistles from the stands.
The Israeli also drew criticism on social media. "Gloukh is mainly thinking about Gloukh again," one supporter wrote on X, while another added: "Take Gloukh off. He has blinkers on and only plays for his own company." Supporters also criticised his lack of awareness, inaccurate passing and tendency to hold on to the ball for too long.
On Ajax Showtime, several supporters said the attacker got too little end product from his moves. "Too many wrong choices from Gloukh, but that's nothing new," one person wrote. Another said: "Oscar, what an ego, always playing for himself." A further supporter argued that Gloukh regularly slowed promising counter-attacks by continuing to dribble instead of passing to an unmarked team-mate.
Calls for a substitution grew louder, with Abdellah Ouazane's name coming up particularly often on social media. "With this much space, better to bring Ouazane on for Gloukh," someone wrote on X. Supporters on Ajax Showtime also called for the young midfielder: "Get Ouazane and Tolu warming up already," one wrote.
Not everyone shared the criticism. Gloukh forced a save from Carnesecchi with a shot in the 32nd minute. "Gloukh is often the scapegoat here, but in my view he's actually an important link. Very intelligent in his interplay, a strong dribbler and good at keeping possession in midfield," one person wrote in the attacker's defence.
