Van der Gijp was deeply shocked by Wouter Goes in the 13th minute of Feyenoord v AZ
René van der Gijp watched an incident involving Wouter Goes in astonishment on Saturday. The regular guest on KieftJansenEgmondGijp saw the AZ defender beaten for pace in the build-up to Feyenoord's early opener as the home side won 2-0.
For Nacho Ferri's opener, Goes headed a long ball from the back into the Feyenoord striker. Ferri then beat him in a sprint, leaving Goes to watch as the home side took the lead.
"I was really shocked by the way Goes was outpaced," Van der Gijp says of the AZ defender. Fellow panellist Wim Kieft points out that Goes had to turn. "But he still ran 15 metres behind him," counters the analyst from Dordrecht.
Looking back at Goes's moment at De Kuip, Van der Gijp adds: "I thought Goes was faster. I thought to myself: if you're outpaced by a striker who isn't the very fastest, that's a bit painful."
"It's naive, too. You have to head a ball like that firmly back, don't you?" Kieft says. "When you're the last defender. So that wasn't great."
After a heavy challenge on Oussama Targhalline, Goes sparked a scuffle and grabbed Luciano Valente by the neck. A few minutes later, the AZ player was booked for a foul on Valente.
In stoppage time, Danny Makkelie spared the defender. Goes went in hard on Targhalline, but did not receive a second yellow card.
