FC Barcelona could soon approach Ajax for ‘emperor in Míchel’s team’

FC Barcelona are considering a move for Ajax defender Youri Baas, according to Spanish outlet SPORT.

Sporting director Deco wants to strengthen a Barcelona defence short of options, particularly at centre-back. Baas reportedly fits the Catalans' profile perfectly.

"The 23-year-old Youri Baas is currently the emperor of Míchel's Ajax defence," according to SPORT. "He is high on Barcelona's list, partly because he can also play at left-back."

Barcelona continue to hold Ajax's youth academy in high regard, according to the Spanish outlet. They also see Jordi Cruyff's presence as sporting director at the Amsterdam club as a plus.

How much Baas would cost remains unclear, but Ajax are thought to be willing to cooperate with his departure. He came close to joining FC Porto last summer, only for the move to fall through at the last moment. Baas remains under contract until mid-2028.

Another option mentioned is Lisandro Martínez. The Argentinian appears free to leave Manchester United and also fits the profile Barcelona have outlined.

On Deco's list, too, is Ruud Nijstad. The 18-year-old FC Twente prodigy has been on their radar for some time, although Barcelona see him primarily as a player for the future.
