FC Bayern Munich is one of the biggest teams and brands in world football. They are right up there with the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona and, as a result, are always a popular choice to travel for friendly matches to give abroad fans an experience they'll never forget. Bayern typically travel abroad for their pre-season, but will be taking a special trip abroad for a friendly to start 2027, to a place Bayern have never been.

As announced on the official FC Bayern website, Bayern will kick off 2027 by traveling to Nairobi Kenya, to take on Dutch giants Ajax in a friendly as part of the grand opening ceremony for the new Raila Odinga International Stadium on January 5th. The match will be part of an international football festival, with the aim to build anticipation for next summer's African Cup of Nations, which will be held in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.

Bayern to make the trip to Africa for friendly against Dutch giants

The friendly will be Bayern's first match after the Bundesliga winter break, with the first league match to follow four days later, as Bayern will travel to Borussia-Park to take on Gladbach, a somewhat brutal travel schedule to start the new year for the squad. FC Bayern board member and head of marketing and sales, Rouven Kasper, believes this will be a great opportunity for the club to grow and strengthen their fan base in Africa, as we have seen them do in Asia and North America in recent years. Kasper went on to say: FC Bayern has millions of fantastic fans in Africa with whom we feel a close connection – it’s a continent with a huge passion for football. For many years, we have consistently maintained a presence in America and Asia with our ‘Audi Summer Tour’. Now we have a new opportunity to further strengthen our connection with our fans in Africa too, to allow people to experience FC Bayern first-hand and to underline our club’s international appeal. We will be making a further contribution to raising the profile of the Bundesliga and are very much looking forward to this special event. Rouven Kasper
