Europa League matchday four: AZ Alkmaar v Juventus

AZ Alkmaar

Juventus

Vicario 6: rarely troubled in the first half, apart from a deflected shot he keeps out comfortably. The defence blocks most of AZ's attempts after the break, while Smit shoots over from an excellent position. Deep into stoppage time, Vicario produces a superb save to deny Meerdink, although the chance is ruled out for offside against the AZ striker.

On the right flank, Kalulu 6 covers for Kolo Muani and sometimes tries to play him in, but rarely makes overlapping runs. He ventures forward more at the start of the second half, then struggles late on as he drops too deep into the box.

Wearing the captain's armband, Gatti 7 starts with alert, precise defending and clean challenges. Early in the second half, he stops Daal getting past him and deflects his shot behind for a corner. He then overcomplicates a counter-attack, costing his team a good chance, before misplacing the decisive pass to Alajbegovic on another foray forward a few minutes later. In the 70th minute, he intercepts the ball on the edge of his area and carries it out of defence. Exhausted, he goes off and hands the armband to Bremer (78' Bremer 5.5: he tries to make his presence felt in the centre of the box during the Dutch side's final onslaught, but struggles badly).

Alongside Gatti, Lucumí 6 aims to be more precise and commit fewer fouls than on recent occasions. He has a largely quiet 80 minutes, then struggles in the closing stages with the rest of the Juventus defence.

Kelly 5 completes the trio of central defenders in Spalletti's back line. He marks well, but his clearances and attempts to start attacks are less convincing, drawing Spalletti's fury on the bench. Along with Cabal, he is at fault for AZ's goal to make it 2-1.

Full of running, Sarr 6 works hard throughout. He has few touches but helps link the different areas of the team, provides cover and wins the ball back.

Back in his Alkmaar, T.Koopmeiners 7 scores with a fine left-footed volley and does not celebrate. In the second half, a mistake by De Busser leaves the Dutch goalkeeper off his line with the ball at Koopmeiners' feet, but he does not attempt a chip from outside the area. He also makes a couple of valuable ball recoveries.

Cambiaso 5.5 starts as a wide midfielder, then drops back when Juventus defend to form a five-man defence with Kalulu on the right and the three centre-backs. He struggles a little at the start of the second half, picks up a booking and goes off with half an hour remaining (60' Cabal 5: he takes up a position on the left flank confidently without taking risks, and also moves across to the right when needed as he swaps places with Kalulu. Along with Kelly, he is at fault for AZ's goal to make it 2-1).

As ever, Woltemade 5.5 looks cumbersome in his movement and often misplaces passes. Tonight he is Juve's central attacking outlet, with Kolo Muani on the right and Alajbegovic on the left. He combines well with the Frenchman in the one-two for Kolo Muani's goal (78' Ekhator 5.5: he makes his debut, plays more defensively than in attack and picks up a booking).

With the team playing mainly down the right through Kolo Muani, Alajbegovic 6.5 sees less of the ball on his side. Midway through the first half, he makes his presence felt with a powerful right-footed shot just over the bar, then handles a couple of balls with the composure of a veteran. In the second half, he gets into position to shoot on a couple of occasions, but first Koopmeiners and then Gatti get the final pass wrong (60' Boga 6: he shows a couple of flashes of his trademark skill).

Kolo Muani 7.5 opens with an angled right-footed shot that goes narrowly wide, then does brilliantly on the right wing to set up Koopmeiners' goal. He scores Juventus's second himself with a fine left-footed shot after doggedly winning the ball back and exchanging passes with Woltemade. He begins the second half on the right before roaming across the front line, often beating his direct opponent with his pace (86' Douglas Luiz: not rated).

A new role for Kolo Muani on the right pays off for manager Spalletti 6.5. Whether it proves a one-night inspiration or a turning point in the season for the French forward and Spalletti remains to be seen. He also manages the start of the second half well, but his team fail to land the knockout blow and struggle badly at the end, when his substitutions do not help.
