Ajax loanee makes horrific challenge and is immediately sent off in title clash
Rosario Central defender Gaston Ávila saw red in the Argentine Primera División on Saturday evening. The Ajax loanee made a horrific challenge on the Estudiantes de Río Cuarto goalkeeper.
After their 2-0 win over Estudiantes, Rosario were champions as things stood. Jubilant players and supporters flooded onto the pitch and celebrated wildly in the stadium.
Others still watched the final few minutes of Boca Juniors' match nervously. In the 96th minute, with virtually the last kick of the game, Enner Valencia scored to make it 0-1 for Boca.
With Valencia's goal, Boca, not Rosario, were champions. Some of the crowd on the pitch received the news while others kept celebrating loudly.
Ávila's tackle, which earned him a red card in the 72nd minute with the score at 1-0, was overshadowed by the bizarre ending.
As a cross came in from the flank, the Ajax loanee, who has made a big impression in his native country so far, launched himself into the air with both legs outstretched. He caught the opposing goalkeeper in the chest with both legs.
