Overall, West Ham United have a good record against Cardiff City. They have won four and lost just one of their last five games against the Welsh side. Their last four league meetings all took place in the Premier League. However, before that, they had some notable matches against each other in the Championship. This included an emphatic 5-0 aggregate playoff semi-final victory for the Hammers back in 2012.

After West Ham got past Cardiff in the Championship playoffs in the 2011/12 season, they then beat Blackpool in the final to gain promotion to the Premier League. Cardiff then joined the Hammers in the top flight the following campaign.

They met on the opening day of the 2013/14 season. Joe Cole gave the Hammers an early lead before Nolan secured the victory. West Ham had former Cardiff player James Collins at the back. Cardiff also had two former Hammers; Craig Bellamy was their captain, and their manager was Malky Mackay.

The two sides then met in the League Cup that campaign, with West Ham winning 3-2. One of West Ham's goalscorers that day was Ravel Morrison, who would go on to have a loan spell at Cardiff. West Ham would have relegation fears that season, but they were eased with a 2-0 win over the Bluebirds. This was a victory despite James Tomkins being sent off. Cardiff finished bottom of the Premier League that season and were relegated.

Cardiff were not back in the Premier League until the 2018/19 season. They lost 3-1 at the London Stadium to the Hammers, where Perez scored a brace. His time at West Ham was brief, but he did score six goals in 19 games.

Neil Warnock's side then defeated the Hammers at the Cardiff City Stadium. This was despite the Hammers having players including Chicharito, Manuel Lanzini, Mark Noble, Felipe Anderson, and Declan Rice. Even Samir Nasri, Marko Arnautovic, and Michail Antonio came off the bench.

Cardiff still went on to be relegated that season, and they even dropped down to League One. Now the two sides are back in the Championship and face off this Wednesday.
