USMNT Championship Recap (Matchday 9 edition): Stoke's run continues, Middlesbrough moves back into top-two
The Championship is back following a multi-week international break. And with it came a handful of big results for the Americans involved in this season's Championship. Here's a summary of all the Matchday 9 action that involved the USMNT.
Middlesbrough capitalizes on second-half goal, joins Swansea City in automatic promotion slots
A 57th-minute goal from Will Lankshear, his seventh so far this Championship season, proved to be the difference as Middlesbrough bested Wolves 1-0 in their first match following the September-October international window.
Both Aidan Morris and Sebastian Berhalter started the match as the midfield tandem. The former played the full 90 minutes, while the latter recorded four shots on target despite also receiving a yellow card and being substituted after 70 minutes. Max Arfsten came on as a late substitute in the 86th minute.
The win brought Middlesbrough back into the Championship's top-two spots, though they would remain in second as a result of Swansea's 2-1 win over Norwich City.
Jack McGlynn assist proves valuable as Stoke City reinforces playoff positioning
Jack McGlynn continued his strong start to life in the Championship on Saturday, providing the assist on what ended up being the game-winning goal in Stoke City's 2-1 win over Bolton. Besides the goal contribution, McGlynn recorded a shot on target but received a yellow card. Luca Bombino came on as a second-half substitute; he would win two tackles during his 45 minutes of action against Bolton.
The win pushed Stoke City up to fourth in the Championship table and extended their unbeaten run to six matches.
Elsewhere ...
George Campbell, who was named to the USMNT's lineup for the latest international window, was an unused substitute in West Brom's 1-0 loss to Birmingham City.
What's next?
Matchday 10 will feature a couple of big contests for the USMNT stars involved in Championship action this season.
The first of those games will see Campbell West Brom travel to Wales to take on a Wrexham side that has now secured a result in five of their last six Championship matches. Kickoff at the Racecourse Ground is set for 2:45 p.m. Eastern Time on Tuesday, October 13.
A little later on, McGlynn Stoke City will host Middlesbrough in what will be a contest between two sides featuring USMNT talent and that are currently in the top eight of the Championship table. Kickoff in that contest is set for 3:00 p.m. Eastern Time on Tuesday.
There is no update with regard to Caleb Wiley's injury status, though his Preston North End side is nonetheless set to travel to Birmingham for a Tuesday afternoon contest.
