“There Is a Reason Why He Hasn’t Started” – Wilder Explains Selection Decision as Blades Prepare For Wrexham
Sheffield United welcome Wrexham to Bramall Lane under the floodlights on Friday night as Chris Wilder’s side look to turn their recent frustrations into three valuable Championship points.
The Blades were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw against Derby County last weekend, despite facing ten men for a significant portion of the contest. United rescued a point, but there was an underlying sense of disappointment that they were unable to make their numerical advantage count and secure a much-needed victory in front of their own supporters.
Friday’s meeting with Wrexham provides another opportunity to deliver a response, although the visitors will arrive in South Yorkshire equally determined to bounce back after suffering defeat in their previous outing.
Phil Parkinson’s side were beaten by Blackburn Rovers last time out, conceding twice without finding the net themselves. While Wrexham have shown they can compete at the top end of the Championship, their away form remains a concern, having recorded just one victory on the road throughout the campaign.
That solitary away success came in early September, when the Welsh outfit produced an impressive 3-0 victory over Millwall.
Team News: Bamford Could Return as Oné Faces Several Weeks Out
Sheffield United have received encouraging news regarding Patrick Bamford ahead of Friday’s encounter, with Wilder hopeful that the experienced striker will be available for selection.
Bamford suffered a significant knock last weekend, but the United manager revealed that the club have assessed the problem throughout the week and remain optimistic about his chances of featuring.
“It was a big bang. We’ve assessed him this week and we’re hopeful that [Bamford] will be available for Friday,” Wilder explained in his pre-match press conference.
However, the news is considerably less positive regarding Ryan Oné, who has suffered a recurrence of the hamstring problem that previously kept him out of action.
Wilder confirmed that the injury affects the same area as the initial issue, meaning the forward is expected to spend several weeks on the sidelines. “Ryan [Oné], we’ve got some disappointing news regarding Ryan; it was the same spot that he got the initial injury, so a reoccurrence of that, so he’s going to be out for a number of weeks,” the United boss said.
Wilder Explains Donovan’s Position in the Starting XI Debate
One of the major talking points ahead of Friday’s fixture is whether Romelle Donovan has done enough to earn a place in United’s starting line-up.
The Brentford loanee impressed after his introduction against Bristol City, offering a direct attacking threat that has been largely absent all season for United.
There is an understandable clamour among supporters to see more of the young winger from the beginning of matches. However, Wilder has made it clear that Donovan must continue to earn his opportunities, pointing towards the competition for places in his attack and the tactical considerations influencing his selection.
“I expect all the subs that come on and make an impact; it’s an important part of the game now,” Wilder explained. The United manager acknowledged Donovan’s positive performance against Bristol City but stressed that other attacking players have also delivered when given their opportunities.
Ben Brereton Diaz and Tahith Chong both impressed against Lincoln City, while changes were made for the trip to Portsmouth before the pair were selected against Bristol City.
Wilder believes those performances deserve recognition, meaning Donovan cannot simply expect to move into the starting XI because of the reaction to his latest cameo.
“Of course he’s in our thoughts, he’s always been in our thoughts but, as I pointed out, and explained pretty clearly, the system that we’re playing, we can’t get three wingers into the team,” he said.
Donovan Offers the Unpredictability Sheffield United Have Been Missing
While Wilder is right to emphasise the importance of competition for places, there is a growing argument that Donovan’s qualities could offer Sheffield United something they have struggled to produce consistently this season.
The teenager appears to bring an element of unpredictability to United’s attacking play. Defenders cannot always anticipate whether he will drive towards the byline, cut inside or attempt to create an opening through individual skill, reminiscent of the threat Iliman Ndiaye brought to Bramall Lane during his time with the Blades.
His willingness to attack defenders is particularly valuable for a Sheffield United side that has struggled to consistently turn possession into meaningful opportunities. A winger capable of beating his man, winning fouls and delivering quality crosses offers an alternative route to goal, especially when opponents sit in a compact defensive shape.
The statistical comparison between Donovan and Brereton Diaz makes for particularly interesting reading, with the former appearing to offer greater productivity across several attacking metrics.
The debate surrounding Donovan inevitably raises questions about Brereton Diaz’s place in the starting XI. When asked whether the Chile international deserved criticism from supporters over his performances, Wilder defended his forward, arguing that he had been brought into the side to help Sheffield United win matches and had fulfilled that responsibility.
Donovan is not the only Sheffield United player who has made an impression from the bench in recent weeks.
Wilder also highlighted the contributions of Tyrese Campbell and Femi Seriki against Derby County, praising the different qualities they brought to the contest.
“I thought Tyrese came onto the pitch on Saturday and gave us something different and then you’ve got Femi coming onto the pitch on Saturday and gave us the drive that we’ve been missing,” the United manager said.
It will be interesting to see if Romelle Donovan is named in the starting eleven on Friday night against Wrexham. Chris Wilder is the man who is paid to make the big decisions, but ultimately, if Donovan doesn’t start and the Blades produce another flat performance for 60 minutes, questions will once again be asked to the United manager regarding his team selection.
