Southampton player ratings: Wasteful Saints sunk by late Wrexham winner

Southampton snatched defeat from the jaws of victory (or at least a draw) as Keven Schlotterbeck's own goal in the 89th minute sunk the Saints at the Racecourse Ground.

After James Ward-Prowse levelled Keiffer Moore's opener from Wrexham, it looked like Southampton might go on to bring all three points home from Wales.

Then, an innocuous flick-on in the middle of the park set Jacques Ekomié away down the left. Fellows dived in and missed his tackle. Nathan Wood froze like a rabbit in headlights, neither closing Ekomié down nor cutting out his low cross.

Daniel Peretz, who was slightly too close to his near post, couldn't reach what can only be described as a weak, low cross that should have been easily dealt with.

It wasn't.

Schlotterbeck tracked Callum O'Hare and could do little more than steer the ball off the crossbar into the empty net in front of some pretty unimpressed construction machinery behind the goal.

Goalkeeper and Defenders

Daniel Peretz — 6.5/10. Three saves, two of them inside his own box. Opta rated him at 0.52 goals prevented. Neither concession was his doing. A corner was headed past him, and the second went in off a teammate. Distribution was near perfect too: 63 of 64 passes found a Saint.

James Bree — 6/10. Quietly reliable at right-back. Pass accuracy of 96.1 per cent from 51 attempts, plus three clearances, two of them headed. One cross from five landed, and that one carved out a big chance. The heat map sits high on the right, banked around the halfway line rather than level with the centre-backs. Withdrawn in stoppage time.

Nathan Wood — 6/10. A 69th-minute booking was the only blemish. There were 117 touches, 96 completed passes from 106 and three aerial duels won. Two tackles as well. That heat map hardly strays into his own third, which shows how far up the pitch Tonda Eckert wanted his back four.

Keven Schlotterbeck — 6/10. Nine clearances. Eleven defensive actions in all, and 121 touches, more than any teammate. Then the 89th minute came along. The ball came off him and into his own net, and a long afternoon of good work counted for nothing. Two set-piece headers had drifted off target earlier. Harsh, but the rating has to reflect it.

Ryan Manning — 7/10. The most creative defender on the pitch. Three chances created, four accurate crosses from eleven, three clearances at the back. His heat map lives in the attacking half along the left touchline, which is where a full-back belongs when his side keeps 67 per cent of the ball. Booked in stoppage time.

Midfielders

James Ward-Prowse — 8/10. The player of the match by a distance. Five shots. Three on target. Then add 67 completed passes from 70, two chances created and both ground duels won. The heat map shows him shuttling across the centre circle instead of staying on either side, which fits the deeper job he has quietly taken on this season.

Flynn Downes — 6.5/10. Tidy without ever taking over. Seventy-three passes from 78 found their target, three chances created, one of them a big one. Six recoveries, two tackles. Dispossessed twice, and a late yellow followed. His heat map sits a shade further forward than Ward-Prowse's. He did most of his work inside the Wrexham half.

Attacking Players

Kuryu Matsuki — 6/10. Busy but wasteful. Only 19 of his 28 passes found a Saint; none of his three crosses landed, and possession went astray twice. Defensively, he grafted: two tackles, an interception, three recoveries. One shot on target from two. Off on 76 minutes.

Finn Azaz — 6.5/10. Both his shots hit the target. Two chances created, two fouls drawn, and four touches inside the box, second only to Larin. Crossing let him down. All five attempts went astray. His heat map pools in the left half-space just outside the penalty area.

Léo Scienza — 7/10. Forty-five minutes, and a decent forty-five. Twenty-two passes from 25 found a Saint, three ground duels won from four, two fouls drawn. One chance created. He held the width on the left touchline rather than tucking inside, which handed Manning room to overlap. Forced off at half-time following a heavy challenge.

Cyle Larin — 5/10. Five shots, one on target, and 0.49 xG left in North Wales. Two big chances slipped past him, the clearest of them on 32 minutes. There were five aerial duels won, and nine touches inside the Wrexham box. Involvement was low overall: 34 touches, seven of them unsuccessful. A yellow card in the 14th minute did not help. August's Championship player of the month will not enjoy the rewatch.

Substitutes - Player Ratings

Samuel Edozie — 4/10. Introduced at half-time. Five minutes later he squared the ball for Ward-Prowse to equalise. Fourteen touches, seven of eight passes completed.

Tom Fellows — 5/10. Fourteen minutes, five touches. A foul won, and both passes completed. Never long enough to change anything.

Divin Mubama — 4/10. Four minutes on the pitch and no touch of the ball to show for it. A single offside flag against him.

Lewis Dobbin — N/A. One minute, one touch, one completed pass. Nothing to judge.
